‘A Mother’s Love Knows No Judgment’

These parents are standing up — and speaking out — for their kids.
Whether through a celebratory Instagram post or touching lyrics in a song, these famous parents have shared their support for their transgender children in many forms. And as Robert De Niro put it, when it comes to his daughter who recently shared her transition publicly: “I don’t know what the big deal is.”
As Pride Month continues on for the rest of June, see how these celeb parents have shared their support for their transgender children.

In celebration of Transgender Day of Visibility in 2023, Jamie Lee Curtis took to Instagram to share a tribute to her daughter Ruby.
“Love is love. A mother’s love knows no judgment,” she wrote. “As a mother, I stand in total solidarity with my children as they move forward in the universe as their authentic selves with their own minds and bodies and ideas. On this trans visibility day my daughter and I are visible.”
The previous year, Curtis officiated Ruby’s wedding to her partner Kynthia in family’s backyard.

Since Dwyane Wade‘s daughter Zaya first came out as transgender in 2020, he and his wife Gabrielle Union have been vocal advocates for the transgender community.
“She’s the strong one in this family. She’s a hero,” the former NBA star said in 2021. “It’s our family’s job to make sure that we listen to her. We listen to the doctors. We ask questions and we formulate our own ideas of how Zaya should be and should be raised in this world and we don’t allow others to do that for us.”
Last year, Wade was honored with the Elevate Prize Catalyst Award for his advocacy award — an honor he told PEOPLE was unexpected.
“Sports is something you can expect an award from,” Wade tells PEOPLE. “But this one right here is not one of those things that I would expect to get an award for. I’m just a parent doing what a good parent should do.”
Wade also shared how proud he is of his daughter for how she’s handled the extra attention she received after coming out as a teen.
“She didn’t ask for this extra excitement in life,” he says. “She just wanted to be a kid and do kid things and live her life and be selfish and worry about herself. That’s what you’re supposed to do at her age, worry about you. But she’s thinking about a larger community, and so I’m damn proud of her as a father.”
He and Zaya have collaborated to create Translatable, an online platform providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth a safe space to express themselves as well as educational resources for families

Back in 2018, Cynthia Nixon shared a photo of herself posing alongside her son Samuel “Seph” Joseph Mozes to celebrate Trans Day of Action.
“I’m so proud of my son Samuel Joseph Mozes (called Seph) who graduated college this month,” she wrote. “I salute him and everyone else marking today’s #TransDayofAction.”
Sade

When Sade returned to music for the first time in six years, she did so with an apology to her son Isaak Adu.
“Young man/ It’s been so heavy for you/ You must have felt so alone,” she sings on the song “Young Lion” on the EP Transa: Selects produced by AIDS non-profit Red Hot. “The anguish and pain/ I should’ve known/ With such a heavy burden/ You had to carry all on your own.”
Adu told Rolling Stone that while there wasn’t anything he “needed to forgive her for” some lyrics certainly made an impact.
The lyrics ‘Forgive me, son, I should have known,’ struck a chord,” he said. “My mum never tried to oppress the boy I silently always knew I was. She always let me be me.”
The song was an adaptation of a letter Sade gave to her son on his 21st birthday.
Adu had previously opened up about his mother’s support amid his transition following a six month stay in the hospital in 2019.
“Thank you for staying by my side these past 6 months Mumma. Thank you for fighting with me to complete the man I am,” he wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for your encouragement when things are hard, for the love you give me. The purest heart. I love you so much. Queen of queens.”

During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show in September 2024, Marlon Wayans shared that his son Kai is the “same baby” he’s always been.
Kai is “the same child they was before — they just got a beard now. Okay! Same baby,” the comedian said before adding that while he “went through the five stages of grief” after learning that Kai was transgender, he is now in “the beautiful, magical place called acceptance.”
Wayans previously told PEOPLE that his process of acceptance took “all of a week.”
“And in that week I grew the most that I ever did in my life,” he explained. “You understand the purpose of kids and the beauty of unconditional love. At the end of the day, in my heart, only thing that matters to me is that my child is happy.”
Heather Dubrow
The Real Housewives of Orange County star shared in March 2023 that her youngest child had come out as transgender in an Instagram post shared in tribute to him. The photo showed the name “Ace” written in the sand, along with the message, “We love you, our youngest son, Ace ❤️.”
Alexis Bellino
Dubrow has bonded with her Real Housewives of Orange County costar Alexis Bellino over their shared experience of raising a transgender son. “Having LGBTQIA+ kids definitely brought us closer,” Dubrow once said of their relationship.
In 2022, Bellino shared a selfie to Instagram introducing the public to her son Miles.
“Hey world, this is Miles. My transgender son,” she wrote. “He’s now a month shy of 15 yrs old, so he’s seen the questions and comments made about him on my IG. Miles now has a voice and has asked me to do this post.”
She later added, “I cannot imagine the strength and courage it took for my baby to do this, but I’m extremely proud of him and I want everyone to understand that love doesn’t change in these situations. It’s unconditional love.”
Ally Sheedy

Back in 2022, Ally Sheedy opened up about her son, Beck, who came out as transgender in his teens.
“I want him to be able to do what he wants to do with his life and have the freedom to make his own choices and surround himself with a loving, supportive community,” Sheedy said of Beck, who she shares with ex-husband David Lansbury. “So far, he’s been able to do that.”
She said she’s “learned a lot,” as a parent and that “Beck doesn’t hide anything. And I feel very comfortable talking to anyone whose kid is just beginning the process of transition. Parents need to educate themselves.”
“It’s natural to have fears about your kids, no matter what,” she added. “But in this case, Beck is in a really great place in his life. I give him the room to run, and I just really try to just watch.”
Lea Salonga
Benjamin Rivera
Lea Salonga and her son Nic Chien spoke to PEOPLE in 2025 about their relationship and how the Tony winner has supported the 18-year-old since he first identified as transmasculine at 14, after being assigned female at birth.
“Every child that comes into this world is different,” Salonga said. “You have to meet your kid where they are.”
“As a parent, I want to set my child up for success,” she later adds. “The grown-ups in the room need to help kids feel safe and strong and ready to conquer the world on their own terms.”
Tia Carrere

Tia Carrere recently told PEOPLE that her 19-year-old son Jude has come out as transgender.
“He knows who he is, and he’s very happy,” she said, adding, “He’s such a sweetheart, he’s like the therapist to all the other kids. When his friends go out drinking or partying too hard, he’s always the designated driver, that kind of caring friend you can always lean on.”
She continues, “I did a good job with that. But I don’t want to congratulate myself too much! He’s his own person!”

Years after Warren Beatty and Annette Bening‘s son Stephen called himself a “survivor” of conversion therapy and transphobic abuse in a tweet, the Bonnie and Clyde actor called his son “my hero.”
“He’s a revolutionary, a genius, and my hero, as are all my children,” Beatty, who is also dad to Benjamin, Isabel and Ella, told Vanity Fair.
In an interview with AARP in 2019, Bening shared her pride for the couple’s oldest child: “He’s managed something that’s very challenging with great style and great intelligence. He’s an articulate, thoughtful person, and I’m very, very proud of him”

Chip and Joanna Gaines on If Being ‘Famous Parents’ Affected Them (Exclusive)

Chip and Joanna Gaines know that things have changed for them since they first became parents, and it’s becoming apparent as they raise their youngest son.
The HGTV stars spoke with PEOPLE for a new special edition, Chip & Joanna Gaines: Their Next Chapter (available now), and were asked if parenting is any different for them now that they are “famous parents.” Reflecting on the fact that their four older kids — Emmie, 15, Duke, 17, Ella, 18, and Drake, 20 — are now mostly grown, the couple says that things are different for their youngest, son Crew, 7.
“In my mind’s eye, it’s almost like we’re sitting at this big long table, and you’re on one side, and I’m on the other side. Crew is this little prep-school kid somewhere in the middle,” Chip, 50, jokes. “And we’ve got one of those little holders that holds the little egg. And we’re like, ‘Excuse me, Alfred, can we please get another this or not?'”

“Like, this kid is going to have a totally different upbringing,” he continues, joking, “these prior four were out shoveling cow manure at [ages] 6, 8, and 10.”
“It’ll be a little different,” Joanna explains. “But I think we have a little more capacity now to think more ‘future.’ What we care about the most is being together and celebrating moments together.”
The mom of five goes on to say that the couple has been prioritizing laying the groundwork to make sure they always have time for their family.
“We can finally have this space to think beyond just the everyday grind,” Joanna says. “I feel like we’re in this really beautiful season of reflection, but also now we can breathe, and we can see the future. What’s the vision for our family? What’s the vision for this business? Finally, we’re there, and now it’s like, ‘Okay, sky’s the limit!'”
Chip explains that for them, family has always been the priority, even when they were also focusing on their business.
“Ten years ago, we were extremely selfish in our desire to protect our family at all costs, which is not easy,” he says. “Everybody knows marriages are hard, families are complicated.”
“Family was most important. Business was most important. Our family was sincerely the most important, but it was a very close second that we cared so deeply about this business, and we wanted it to be relevant. We wanted it to be real,” Chip continues. “Now fast-forward 10 years, and things have shifted in this beautiful way.”
Chip & Joanna Gaines
The proud dad says that now, they’re lucky enough not to have to worry about “making it” anymore.
“I just feel a lot more confident about who we are as a couple now,” Chip says. “I love who we are together. And now you look at these beautiful kids who are — knock on wood — evolving into just great human beings. Just to raise kids that are not brats seems like a low bar, but it is harder than it looks.”
“We’ve got a boy who’s dating now, and the dad keeps reaching out like, ‘Hey, I’m so thankful for the way you’ve raised this boy because he’s really good to my daughter,’ ” the dad of five explains. “We don’t care if they’re the President of the United States or they’re going to go to Yale or Harvard. Obviously, we’d love for any of those things to occur, but that wasn’t the bar we set.”
“It was just like: Don’t be jerks. We care about our kids being good people in the communities that they eventually step into,” he adds.

Jaime King engaged to new man after losing physical custody of her sons in bitter divorce: report

Jamie King appears to be firmly in Loverville.
The “Hart of Dixie” star is engaged to investment banker Austin Sosa following her contentious divorce battle with ex Kyle Newman, People reports.
King, 46, recently lost physical custody of her sons James, 11, and Leo, 9, and was forced out of her Los Angeles pad for owing more than $42,000 in back rent.
As a result, King had been “staying with [Sosa’s] parents” in the lead-up to their engagement.
“She is very close with his family,” a source told the outlet.
In new photos obtained by Page Six, King flashed her diamond sparkler following an appointment at Sally Hershberger Salon in West Hollywood Monday.
King has only included Sosa in the caption of her Instagram post from last month, though she did not post a photo of her new beau.
“My God, I am the luckiest and most great mother ever. Thank you to Pammy, Chase, Austin, Gwendolyn and Carlos. Family forever 🎀💅🏻💯💗,” she wrote alongside several images of her with her two sons.
In March, a judge ruled that King and Newman, 49, will share legal custody of their two children, but the filmmaker will have sole physical custody.
King was given visitation rights, but she would have to be supervised and could only see the boys three times a week. In addition to supervised visits, King had been ordered to finish six months of rehab for drugs and alcohol.
Her custody agreement was dramatically amended after she failed to complete a six-month drug and alcohol program that consisted of weekly testing, a 26-week parenting program and both individual and conjoint counseling with her children.
“I’ve never had to think about myself as sober or not sober. I stopped using drugs at 17 or something,” King said.
In October 2024, Newman filed for sole custody of the kids after claiming he found his ex-wife “strung out” and “drunk” while watching their sons.
The exes were locked in a lengthy legal battle over finances and custody when King filed for divorce in 2020 after 13 years of marriage. They finally settled their divorce in 2023.
In March, King broke her silence after being kicked out of her LA home for racking up more than $42,000 in back rent.

Sophie Turner Admits She’s ‘Never Watched’ ‘Game of Thrones’

NEED TO KNOW
- Sophie Turner appeared on the Dish podcast and confessed that she’s never watched her widely celebrated series, Game of Thrones
- The actress began her role as Sansa Stark at the age of 14, and remained on the series for its entirety, leading her to say goodbye to the character at 23
- She told podcast co-hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett that during her time on the HBO series, she learned several life lessons, including an unexpected sex education
Sophie Turner credits Game of Thrones for the many life lessons she learned during her adolescence.
Turner, 29, appeared on the Dish podcast and recalled for hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett that her “amazing” experience on the series for nine years “informed [her] entire life in terms of like business decisions, just etiquette on set, how to act,” adding, “Everything I learned from Game of Thrones — and a bit from my parents”
Turner first auditioned for the role of Sansa Stark at the age of 12 and began filming two years later. She wrapped the series when she was 23 during the show’s eighth and final season.
Although she spent a large portion of her life filming the series, she confessed to the co-hosts that she has yet to watch the show, partly due to her aversion to watching herself on screen. However, she said filming the Emmy-winning series was the “best acting class.”
Helen Sloan/HBO
She noted that she “loved” filming the series, which also starred Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage, Gwendoline Christie, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey and many more.
“I never had proper formal training, so I got to learn from the amazing actors around me, which I felt like I won a competition,” she said. “But it was great. We all were a family.”
“My character, I got to live with,” Turner continued. “So it felt like we kind of merged into one person by the end of it. But it was amazing.”
Along with learning more about the craft and herself, she also quipped that she got her sex education lessons from watching the graphic scenes filmed on set.
She acknowledged the series’ nude scenes — some of which were intertwined with controversial storylines — were “really crazy s—.”
“I definitely got my sex education from that show,” she joked. “More, more than enough.”
Dish
In October 2024, less than five years after Game of Thrones wrapped, she was asked by Variety if she would ever play Sansa again.
“Maybe. I mean, it would have to be the exact same cast and the exact same crew otherwise, I wouldn’t go back, and that would just be Season 9,” she said, adding, “I don’t think we’re going to do a Season 9.”
However, the actress reiterated that she “loved playing Sansa.”
“I do wonder often what would she be doing now,” she told Variety. “Where would she be five years later, what would she be doing?”

All eight seasons of Game of Thrones are available to stream on HBO Max. Turner’s next project is the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series Steal.
