AI Simulating Interactions Between Diverse Advanced Civilizations

ET Communication

The possibility of life beyond Earth has fascinated humans for centuries. Science fiction writers have imagined encounters with extraterrestrial civilizations, but what would actually happen if we were to make contact? Would it lead to war or peace? Researchers have used advanced language models to simulate interactions with various types of civilizations, from pacifists to militarists, revealing intriguing challenges.

Radio transmissions have been sent out into space since 1895, with signals leaking out and weakening as they travel. The Arecibo message of 1974 was intentionally sent into space, but it won’t reach its target for another 22,131 years. As signals travel further, they become weaker, making detection beyond about 100 light years unlikely.

Researchers at Northwestern University used an artificial intelligence framework called CosmoAgent to simulate interactions between various alien civilizations. The system, based on a Large Language Model (LLM), allowed civilizations to choose traits like hiding, fighting, or collaborating. This simulation provided insights into possible outcomes, from alliances to rivalries.

The models also considered the diversity and conditions for life in each civilization, analyzing how they might evolve over time. Factors like ethics, morals, beliefs, and sciences influenced how a civilization would respond to alien contact. However, there are limitations to the research, mainly due to an Earth-centric bias in developing the language model.

Future research aims to overcome these obstacles and create more realistic simulations of inter-civilizational interactions. By incorporating a broader range of ethical paradigms and decision-making processes, scientists hope to better understand how first contact with alien civilizations might unfold.

Renowned Physicist Peter Higgs Passes Away at 94

LHC

It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of Professor Peter Higgs at the age of 94. Known for his groundbreaking work in the field of physics, particularly for his contribution to the discovery of the Higgs Boson, Professor Higgs leaves behind a legacy that has forever changed our understanding of the universe.

Born on May 29th, 1929 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Peter Higgs overcame childhood asthma and a transient upbringing to become one of the most renowned physicists of his time. His early education at Cotham Grammar School in Bristol ignited his passion for science, particularly quantum mechanics. This passion led him to pursue a degree in physics, eventually earning a PhD with a thesis that laid the foundation for his later work.

Throughout his career, Professor Higgs delved into the question of why particles have mass, proposing the existence of a field that permeates through space and interacts with particles to give them mass. This groundbreaking theory, known as the Higgs Field, paved the way for the discovery of the Higgs Boson, also referred to as the God Particle.

Despite facing initial challenges in securing a job in academia, Higgs persisted in his research and eventually found himself at the University of Edinburgh where he further developed his theory. It was not until 2012, at the age of 83, that Higgs received confirmation of the discovery of the Higgs Boson at the Large Hadron Collider in CERN.

Throughout his life, Professor Higgs remained humble and dedicated to the pursuit of science rather than fame. His quiet demeanor and unwavering commitment to his work earned him respect and admiration from colleagues and the scientific community at large. His passing marks the end of an era in the world of physics, but his contributions will continue to inspire future generations of scientists.
