Albert M. Camarillo epitomizes the essence of old-school Compton. His family roots in the city trace back to his father’s migration from the Mexican state of Michoacán in 1914, when Compton was predominantly farmland. Camarillo’s recollections span the decades, from the integration of Black families in the 1950s to his tenure as student body president at Dominguez High during Compton’s transition into a hub of Black culture. His early academic pursuits even honed in on the city’s evolving identity.

Even after more than 50 years away from Compton, Camarillo remains deeply connected to his hometown. The retired Stanford professor recently penned his memoir, “Compton in My Soul: A Life in Pursuit of Racial Equality,” shedding light on the city’s multifaceted transformations during his absence, from a predominantly Black community to a predominantly Latino one. This summer, Camarillo embarked on a journey across California to promote his book, culminating in a visit to Compton, a poignant moment that brought his narrative full circle.

The venue for his talk was Color Compton, a nonprofit organization nestled in a local strip mall that leverages art and history to engage and empower the youth of Compton. Camarillo expressed his admiration for the group’s mission, reminiscing about his own childhood in Compton and marveling at the artwork capturing the city’s rich history and vibrant culture.

Engaging with the youth at Color Compton, Camarillo’s wisdom and authenticity captivated the audience, bridging generational divides and instilling a sense of pride in the community’s heritage. He shared personal anecdotes of growing up in Compton, navigating its shifting social dynamics, and emphasized the importance of giving back to uplift one’s community.
