Perseverance Observes Phobos, Deimos, and Mercury Transiting the Sun

NASA’s Perseverance rover is currently focused on exploring the Martian surface and collecting samples for future return to Earth. However, the rover recently took a break from its tasks to observe the heavens above. Utilizing Mastcam-Z, the rover’s primary science camera, Perseverance captured the unique moments when Phobos, Deimos, and Mercury passed in front of the Sun.

Phobos and Deimos, the moons of Mars, have garnered attention for their peculiar characteristics. These two moons are irregularly shaped and are often described as ‘potato-shaped’. They orbit quite close to Mars compared to other moons in the Solar System and are believed to be captured objects, potentially asteroids or debris from the early Solar System. With their low albedo and composition similar to carbonaceous chondrite asteroids, the argument for their captured origin is supported.

While both moons share similarities with asteroids, Phobos contains minerals also found on Mars, indicating a potential alternate formation process involving a powerful impact that ejected Martian material into orbit, eventually forming the moon. Despite the debate over their origins, Phobos and Deimos have circular orbits near the Martian equator, hinting at a complex history involving possible impacts or interactions with other celestial bodies.

The future of these Martian moons is intriguing. Phobos, already the closest moon to its planet, is gradually moving closer to Mars due to its lowering orbit. In approximately 50 million years, Phobos may reach the Roche limit, leading to a potential collision with Mars or the formation of a dust ring around the planet. On the other hand, Deimos orbits at a greater distance from Mars and is drifting further away, eventually predicted to move beyond Mars’ gravitational pull in the distant future.

Captured in animations, the transits of Phobos and Deimos in front of the Sun provide valuable insights into their orbits and behaviors over time. These observations offer scientists a glimpse into the mysteries surrounding these Martian moons and allow for a better understanding of their evolution. However, to unravel the full story of Phobos and Deimos, researchers eagerly await the opportunity to collect and study samples directly from these moons.

Past missions to study these moons have faced challenges, such as Russia’s Phobos-Grunt mission, which failed to reach its destination. Nevertheless, Japan’s upcoming Martian Moons eXploration mission (MMX) aims to land on Phobos, collect samples, and return them to Earth by 2031. These samples hold the potential to provide crucial insights into the origin and history of Phobos and Deimos, shedding light on their mysterious past.

In addition to observing the Martian moons, Perseverance also had the opportunity to witness Mercury passing in front of the Sun. The images captured during this extraordinary event offer a glimpse into the beauty and complexity of our celestial neighborhood.

As Perseverance continues its mission on Mars, these remarkable observations of Phobos, Deimos, and Mercury serve as a reminder of the vast and diverse wonders of our solar system. Galactic Demolition Derby: A Stellar Showdown in the Center of the Galaxy

The heart of the Milky Way is a place of chaos and destruction, where stars collide at breakneck speeds, creating a stellar demolition derby unlike anything seen in our own solar neighborhood. At the center of it all is the supermassive black hole known as Sagittarius A*, a gravitational behemoth four million times more massive than our Sun. These collisions destroy low-mass stars before they have a chance to evolve into red giants, leading to a deficit of these stellar giants in the galactic center.
