Researchers may have discovered why mercury levels are persistently high in tuna.

Mercury poisoning is a haunting memory from the past, with incidents in Japan and other parts of the world shocking the global community into action to curb this toxic metal’s release. While significant progress has been made in reducing mercury pollution from human activities over the years, a recent study on tuna samples suggests that the battle against mercury contamination is far from over.

A team of French researchers conducted an analysis of thousands of tuna samples spanning over five decades, from 1971 to 2022, and made a startling discovery – mercury levels in tuna have remained essentially unchanged during this period. David Point, an environmental chemist at the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development and one of the study’s authors, emphasized the necessity of significant emissions cuts to combat mercury pollution effectively.

Mercury, although a naturally occurring element, is predominantly introduced into the environment through human activities such as mining and burning fossil fuels. Consumption of contaminated seafood is a common route of human exposure to mercury, with potential adverse effects on the nervous, digestive, and immune systems.
