Snow in the mountains and rain on the coasts during Easter weekend storms

Over the Easter weekend, spring break snow bunnies celebrated a rare treat as snow blanketed the mountains in Southern California, bringing joy to skiers and snowboarders at resorts like Mammoth and Big Bear. Meanwhile, those looking to participate in Easter egg hunts in Los Angeles had to stay indoors due to the unusually wet weather that hit the city.

Meteorologist Ariel Cohen of the National Weather Service described the weather phenomenon as quite rare, with multiple feet of snow falling in the mountain resorts while the southern coast experienced soaking rains and thunderstorms that led to flooding in areas like Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties. This weekend’s precipitation was just the beginning, with more rain expected across the state for the start of April.

The heavy rainfall led to serious flooding in parts of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties, with over 6 inches of rain in some areas like Montecito, and up to 4 inches in South L.A., the beach cities, and Long Beach. The aftermath of the storm included a rockslide that closed a section of Malibu Canyon Road on Friday evening, with no expected reopening until Monday according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

The wet weather disrupted plans for many Easter holiday-goers, forcing the cancellation or rescheduling of popular egg hunts in Pasadena, Santa Anita Park, and Garden Grove. Meteorologists warned that even though the skies cleared up on Sunday, postponed events could face the risk of being rained out again next weekend.

“Next weekend looks to be unsettled,” Cohen cautioned. “We can’t rule out some showers.” Similar storm patterns are expected in other parts of the state, with National Weather Service meteorologist Tony Fuentes in Reno remarking, “It’s a lot of weekend weather.”

The Tahoe area experienced wet snow over the weekend, while the San Francisco Bay Area saw showers and thunderstorms bringing up to 2 inches of rain to certain regions. More “unstable” weather is predicted to return starting Thursday, with meteorologist Dylan Flynn from the National Weather Service commenting, “It’s probably the most typical time of year for us to have these types of showers, but this was certainly above normal.” Flynn also added that the wet weather may continue to affect spring weekends, stating, “It’s just bad luck, basically.”

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Protesters reach an agreement to dismantle encampment

Protesters at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have agreed to end their pro-Palestinian encampment following an agreement reached with the school, university officials announced on Sunday. The encampment, which had been in place for two weeks, will be dismantled by Tuesday, marking the end of what was believed to be the last standing encampment at a Wisconsin college.

University officials had allowed the encampment to remain on a patch of lawn between Mitchell Hall and a busy thoroughfare on the campus’s southern boundary, opting not to involve law enforcement. This approach differed from the response at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where police were called in to remove tents after negotiations fell through. Despite initial efforts to disband the encampment, Wisconsin-Madison eventually reached an agreement with protesters to voluntarily dismantle the camp prior to commencement ceremonies.

Chancellor Mark Mone of Wisconsin-Milwaukee stated last Wednesday that the university had exhibited “the widest possible amount of patience and restraint.” However, he also cautioned that patience was wearing thin and hinted at potential action by the school. Following discussions with the UWM Popular University for Palestine Coalition, the university agreed to advocate for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, condemn the destruction of schools and universities in Gaza by Israeli forces, and hold meetings with protest leaders regarding university investments.

Additionally, the university pledged to urge the Water Council, a Milwaukee organization of water technology companies, to sever connections with two Israeli government-owned entities, Mekorot and the Israel Innovation Authority. Chancellor Mone serves as the treasurer on the Water Council’s board of directors.

In return for these commitments, the protesters agreed to dismantle the encampment beginning on Sunday and completing the process by Tuesday. They also agreed not to disrupt the university’s commencement ceremonies scheduled for Sunday. In a statement, the protesters expressed their satisfaction with the agreement, stating, “After hard fought edits and careful consideration by the coalition, we determined we had obtained all possible benefits from the encampment.”

The resolution of the encampment at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee represents a successful outcome of negotiations between university officials and protesters. By reaching a compromise that addresses the concerns of both parties, a peaceful resolution has been achieved, allowing for the encampment to be taken down without incident.
