Indian Wells, Calif. — A disruption occurred during the quarterfinal match between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev at the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday, as a swarm of bees descended on the court, prompting a nearly two-hour delay. Alcaraz tried to swat the bees away before seeking cover, leading to the suspension of the match with Alcaraz serving at 1-1. Despite the interruption, Alcaraz went on to secure a victory with a score of 6-3, 6-1, in a match that lasted one hour and 29 minutes, shorter than the delay itself, which lasted 1 hour and 48 minutes.

The disruption was caused by dozens of bees attaching themselves to the overhead spider camera that moves across the court. A man courageously used a vacuum to remove the bees, despite lacking any protective gear.

Both players had to leave the court during the delay and upon returning, the chair umpire warned them about the remaining bees. Zverev made a light-hearted comment about being fine to play on his side of the court despite the situation.

The bee vacuumer was called back to the court, armed with a spray bottle, and received loud cheers from the crowd. He even took time to take selfies with fans, providing a moment of amusement for Alcaraz and Zverev. The man went on to spray the walls surrounding the court to ensure the bees were kept at bay.

At one point, a bee even landed on a player’s towel, adding to the tension of the situation. Alcaraz expressed his concerns about a possible resurgence of the bees on his side of the court, but an ATP Tour supervisor urged him to proceed with the warmup.

The event’s owner, Larry Ellison, alongside former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, were spectators in Ellison’s box during the match, witnessing the unusual turn of events caused by the bee swarm.
