Brea man released from prison attempts to open another fake Botox practice

After spending time in prison for impersonating a medical professional and performing unlicensed cosmetic procedures, Elias Renteria Segoviano, 63, wasted no time in attempting to open another illegal Botox practice in Brea, just two weeks after his release. This brazen move has landed him in trouble once again, facing new charges for his illegal activities.

Segoviano caught the attention of his probation officer when he tried to rent space at the Phenix Salon Suites in Brea, the same location where he had previously operated his illicit business under the name Botox in Anaheim. The Orange County district attorney’s office issued a news release detailing Segoviano’s latest attempt to deceive and defraud unsuspecting clients.

Segoviano had informed the suite owners under a fake name of his intention to conduct Botox injections and face thread lifting procedures, despite lacking the necessary medical qualifications. His application for a business license in Brea was denied, as authorities were quick to uncover his fraudulent activities.

His previous arrest in July 2022 at the Phenix Salon saw Segoviano preying on Spanish-speaking women, administering multiple cosmetic treatments to over two dozen victims. These included Botox injections, lip, and face fillers, all of which were confirmed to contain potentially harmful and counterfeit substances.

As a result of his actions, Segoviano pleaded guilty to several felonies such as unauthorized practice of medicine, false indication of a medical license, and perjury. Additionally, he admitted to falsely presenting himself as a licensed medical practitioner, misrepresenting his qualifications, and impersonating a professional nurse, all considered misdemeanors.

“Segoviano admitted performing invasive procedures and injecting victims with potentially counterfeit Botox, fillers, anesthetics, and other medical drugs that placed the public at extreme risk,” stated the district attorney.

Although initially sentenced to four years, Segoviano was released in December due to credit for time served in jail prior to his guilty plea, placed on community supervision instead. However, his recent arrest has him back behind bars on a $20,000 bail, facing charges of unauthorized practice of medicine and falsely claiming to be a licensed medical practitioner.

Orange County Dist. Atty. Todd Spitzer remarked on Segoviano’s blatant disregard for the law, stating, “This man walked the walk and talked the talk of being a licensed medical professional, but he was anything but what he pretended to be.” Spitzer highlighted the urgency for anyone treated by Segoviano to come forward and assist in the investigation.

It is clear that Segoviano’s criminal behavior persists despite his time in prison, showing a pattern of deception and exploitation. The district attorney’s office is urging potential victims of his fraudulent practices to contact investigator Jesse Alfonzo at (714) 834-6538, further unraveling the extent of Segoviano’s crimes.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Protesters reach an agreement to dismantle encampment

Protesters at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have agreed to end their pro-Palestinian encampment following an agreement reached with the school, university officials announced on Sunday. The encampment, which had been in place for two weeks, will be dismantled by Tuesday, marking the end of what was believed to be the last standing encampment at a Wisconsin college.

University officials had allowed the encampment to remain on a patch of lawn between Mitchell Hall and a busy thoroughfare on the campus’s southern boundary, opting not to involve law enforcement. This approach differed from the response at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where police were called in to remove tents after negotiations fell through. Despite initial efforts to disband the encampment, Wisconsin-Madison eventually reached an agreement with protesters to voluntarily dismantle the camp prior to commencement ceremonies.

Chancellor Mark Mone of Wisconsin-Milwaukee stated last Wednesday that the university had exhibited “the widest possible amount of patience and restraint.” However, he also cautioned that patience was wearing thin and hinted at potential action by the school. Following discussions with the UWM Popular University for Palestine Coalition, the university agreed to advocate for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, condemn the destruction of schools and universities in Gaza by Israeli forces, and hold meetings with protest leaders regarding university investments.

Additionally, the university pledged to urge the Water Council, a Milwaukee organization of water technology companies, to sever connections with two Israeli government-owned entities, Mekorot and the Israel Innovation Authority. Chancellor Mone serves as the treasurer on the Water Council’s board of directors.

In return for these commitments, the protesters agreed to dismantle the encampment beginning on Sunday and completing the process by Tuesday. They also agreed not to disrupt the university’s commencement ceremonies scheduled for Sunday. In a statement, the protesters expressed their satisfaction with the agreement, stating, “After hard fought edits and careful consideration by the coalition, we determined we had obtained all possible benefits from the encampment.”

The resolution of the encampment at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee represents a successful outcome of negotiations between university officials and protesters. By reaching a compromise that addresses the concerns of both parties, a peaceful resolution has been achieved, allowing for the encampment to be taken down without incident.
