Melinda French Gates found strength in Serena Williams.
The famed philanthropist, 60, praised the tennis star, 43, for giving her the confidence to embrace her own body during a powerful conversation documented in a season 2 episode of her Moments That Make Us series on YouTube.
French Gates recalled meeting Williams for the first time at a dinner, where guests were invited to dress up in costumes before heading into the “joyful” event. The outfits, however, were provided and seemingly limited in assorted sizes.
“We both come in late, and you and I are looking at the costumes,” the mom of three told the athlete. “I’m looking at these costumes and I’m thinking to myself, ‘There is no way one of these is going to fit in my hips’. And I said it out loud,” she added.

Talking to Williams, the billionaire activist recalled, “You said, ‘And you think one of them is going to fit me!’ ” before the pair burst out laughing when thinking back to the situation they found themselves in at the event.
“I just went, ‘Oh my God. Here’s somebody who’s so real in our bodies to celebrate who we are,’ ” French Gates remembered thinking at the time, noting that she told Williams her positive realization that night.
French Gates recalled telling the Olympian that she “didn’t follow tennis that much,” but the “one time” she saw Williams play, she was captivated by the confidence the athlete displayed in her own body and strength.
“I happened to sit behind you [at the match] and I thought, ‘There is a woman who is so strong in her body… Why are we not all celebrating our bodies?’ And it gave me the confidence to do that,” the philanthropist said.
Williams replied, “Super wow. Thank you for saying that.”
Of that night they were trying on costumes, the tennis player recalled praising French Gates’ figure at the party.

“I looked at you. I said, ‘Oh, you got body!'” Williams reminded her in the episode, prompting the duo to smile and laugh at the memory.
French Gates added, “You made me feel much better about it.”
Williams emphasized, “You got a nice body!” She told her, “I’m like, ‘Sis, where do you get that from?’ ”
“I loved it, I loved it,” French Gates replied.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, French Gates recalled the “sweet” interaction she had with Williams and the empowering moment they shared together at the event.
“That is something that we connected over the first time we met,” she told PEOPLE exclusively. “We were at dinner together with a group of women the night before, and then I saw her the next day. Same group of women, but a different setting.”
“It was just one of those vulnerable moments… Everybody else was in these costumes and there was one that fit everybody,” French Gates continued. “I think most women don’t realize that all of us struggle with some form of body issue. You might not like your arms or your legs or your hips or whatever.”

“And here she is just this incredibly strong, powerful woman on the court,” she gushed of Williams.
French Gates’ Moments That Makes Us YouTube series released its second installment on Wednesday, Aug. 6. The release came one year after its debut season, which she launched in celebration of turning 60.
Season 1 featured impactful conversations with changemakers of all ages, who candidly discussed their biggest life transitions. Guests included Michelle Obama, Megan Rapinoe, Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King.

Why Michelle Obama fought ‘first sparky feelings’ when she met ‘sexy’ Barack

Michelle Obama took “IMO” listeners down memory lane on Wednesday.
The former first lady kicked off the podcast episode by breaking down how she fell in love with her husband of 32 years, Barack Obama.
The pair’s love story came up when brother Craig Robinson asked “what first attracted” Michelle, 61, to her partner.
The former lawyer explained that she was Barack’s mentor at a law firm when she met the “hot shot” everyone was “abuzz” about.
While Michelle assumed he was “probably a little weird” and “nerdy,” she felt the “first sparky feeling” when they spoke on the phone prior to meeting in person.
“He had his Barack Obama voice,” she noted. “The voice was sexier than the image I had. I was like, ‘Ooh, I didn’t expect this.’ And he was older and self-assured.”
However, the single picture Michelle had of Barack, now 64, “wasn’t a great one,” so she ultimately “wasn’t feeling anything” — until his “first day on the job.”
Michelle recalled, “He stands up. He’s tall. And he’s much cuter than his picture. So I was pleasantly surprised that he was attractive. He was kind of cool in a way I didn’t expect.”
The duo “really hit it off” during a long lunch together and felt “a hint of a spark” — but Michelle had “ruled out … this dude” since she was his advisor and didn’t want to be “tacky” and “inappropriate.”
Despite her attempt to set Barack up with her pals, the duo became “really good friends” and, over the course of a “slow burn” summer, she began to “really like him.”
Barack was the one to ask Michelle out, quipping, “You’re cute, you’re cool. Why not? Who cares what the firm thinks? It’s just a firm. And this is our business.”
It took “a couple of weeks” for him to “convince” his now-wife to “go on a proper date,” and she called his directness “kind of sexy.”
Michelle expressed relief that she didn’t “throw the baby out with the bath” over her “crazy principles” and “rule-follow[ing]” personality.
She noted, “I could have missed my dream guy. He was right in front of me and I was convincing myself, even against his efforts, that we shouldn’t go out. Long story short, I gave in.”
The couple tied the knot in October 1992, going on to welcome daughters Malia, now 27, and Sasha, now 24, in 1998 and 2001, respectively.
Although Michelle and Barack have faced ongoing divorce speculation in recent months, they have continued to clap back at rumors.
Most recently, they playfully addressed the chatter on “IMO,” with Barack joking their relationship had been “touch and go for a while.”
Michelle corrected him, saying, “There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I have thought about quitting my man. We’ve had some really hard times and we’ve had a lot of fun times, a lot of adventures and I’ve become a better person because of the man I’m married to.”
On Wednesday, she reminded listeners that all couples have to do “difficult” work together, from “learn[ing] how to argue” to sometimes “not lik[ing] the person you live with.”
Michelle, who believes she and Barack “will be married forever,” added, “Marriage is hard in the best marriages, and I am lucky enough to be in one. I don’t want people to look at my relationship and think it’s all glamour and glory.”

- The parents have been candid throughout their journey with the toddler, from his time in the NICU to his experience with rehabilitation, physical therapy and occupational therapy
- “Now almost 18 lbs his personality is shining more,” the dad said
Angela Watson and her husband Brian Nahas are proud parents.
The Step by Step star first announced she had welcomed her first child, a baby boy named James, in an Instagram post on July 18, 2024. She was 48 years old at the time.
Throughout the past year, both she and Nahas, 64, have been sharing their journey as parents, from James’ time in the NICU to his experience with rehabilitation, physical therapy and occupational therapy.

On Aug. 2, Nahas shared a video update to his Instagram account after 18 days of James being in rehabilitation. “The therapists seem to be seeing some strength and good moments in his daily work with PT [physical therapy], OT [occupational therapy] & Speech/language,” he wrote in the caption.
According to a GoFundMe created by a friend of the couple “to support Brian and Angela Nahas as they navigate this unexpected journey as new parents,” the toddler “was born with a serious heart defect that required extensive medical care from a team of specialists.”
The video showed nurses working with James as he played with toys, learning sounds and shapes — even receiving a high five from a furry friend.
Nahas called the first 12 days “tough,” adding that they were filled with “consistent throwing up,” but “Now almost 18 lbs his personality is shining more, with unexpected hand waves, fun giggles and unexpected sweet sounds😊 coming from him.”
James also did well on his swallow test when it came to checking whether or not he could handle liquids and purée. However, there were still some setbacks.
“Unfortunately from forced spitting up or his own strength he has had to replace his nose feeding tube 4 x’s in the last 6 days,” Nahas wrote, adding that James would be undergoing a procedure on Aug. 11 to replace tubes and “free him up for mobility … so he can come home and continue to grow and get stronger.”

Shirtless Orlando Bloom shows off jacked body at the beach

Life’s a beach — and newly single Orlando Bloom is just playing in the sand.
The shirtless actor flaunted his fit physique during a beach outing with friends in California amid rumors that his ex Katy Perry has moved on with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Photos obtained by Page Six showed Bloom looking very relaxed as he put his toned abs on display while going for dip in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday.
Bloom, 48, wore green swim trunks and some jewelry as he hit the waves.
The sighting comes days after the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star applauded a satirical post trolling Perry’s rumored romance with Trudeau.
“Orlando Bloom Spotted At Dinner With Angela Merkel,” read a faux headline from the Onion about the actor and the former German Chancellor.
“Just weeks after announcing his split with fiancée Katy Perry, English actor Orlando Bloom was photographed Friday dining with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel,” read the caption detailing the fake reporting.
“‘Angela kept Orlando laughing all night — he couldn’t keep his eyes off her!’ said an insider source who spotted the pair sipping wine, slurping oysters, and splitting a decadent piece of chocolate layer cake at a Michelin-starred restaurant.”
Bloom shared a series of clapping emojis under the satirical post after he and Perry, 40, confirmed their split in July.
Perry and Trudeau, 53, sparked romance rumors after they were seen dining together at a Montreal eatery last week. They also reportedly went for an hour-long stroll with the pop star’s dog, Nugget.
Days later, the politician — who separated from his wife, Sophie Grégoire, in August 2023 — was caught supporting the singer at her “Lifetimes” tour.
Following the outings, it was reported that the unlikely pair had been in contact for weeks after meeting at an event and bonding over their shared desire to make the world a better place.
