Orioles-Angels series preview: The trade deadline hangover series

So… here we are. There’s something cruel about the scheduling gods sending the Los Angeles Angels into Camden Yards the day after the trade deadline. Both of these teams spent Monday afternoon dismantling pieces of their roster, and now they get to spend three days looking at what’s left. If you’re looking for a series with energy, playoff stakes, or even basic competence, look elsewhere. Instead, this looks more like two front offices’ actual public confessions about their 2026 seasons, playing out in real time on a baseball field.

The Orioles enter at 54-58, still technically alive at 2.5 games out of the last AL Wild Card spot, but certainly not feeling like it. Mike Elias shipped out Adley Rutschman to the Red Sox in the single biggest trade of his tenure, a gutting move for this fanbase, but it wasn’t the only one. Taylor Ward got sent to Seattle for three pitchers, Tyler Wells went to Tampa Bay, and Dean Kremer got dealt to Minnesota. The rotation and the middle of the order both look different than they did a week ago. Trevor Rogers is the one significant piece they chose not to move.

The Angels, at 43-69, are comfortably out of it, and interim GM John Mozeliak finally treated them that way at the deadline, dealing José Soriano to Toronto, Jo Adell to Cleveland, Ryan Zeferjahn to Chicago, and Brent Suter to Atlanta. It’s the rebuild the Angels have avoided doing for years, several seasons and several wasted Mike Trout primes too late. What’s left is Reid Detmers, back in the rotation after a year in relief, and Grayson Rodriguez, who Orioles fans will remember fondly even as his numbers in Anaheim have been ugly. The two sides remain linked by the November trade that sent Rodriguez west for Ward, a deal that’s looked worse and worse for Baltimore as Rodriguez has battled diminished stuff and Ward is now a Mariner.

Here’s the part where I’d ordinarily tell you who’s pitching Game 1 and Game 3. But I can’t. Both teams have a TBD penciled in for one game this series, a natural result of trading half the pitching staff 24 hours before first pitch. Baltimore doesn’t have Kremer anymore, and Kyle Bradish just threw Sunday against Philadelphia on shortened rest from a rain delay, so he’s not lined up on turn either. The Angels lost Soriano to the Blue Jays, and Jack Kochanowicz and Yusei Kikuchi are both still on the 60-day injured list. Neither team has announced who’s filling the gaps. Check back closer to first pitch—these might not clear up until a few hours before the game.

Game 1: Tuesday, 6:35 p.m. Eastern

LAA starter: Grayson Rodriguez – 3-3, 7.98 ERA, 36 SO

Rodriguez’s season line is rough. I feel bad for him, although then I think about how he’s a former Oriole first-rounder who once looked like a future ace, and the feelings get a little complicated. Rodriguez dealt with bone spurs earlier, but the Angels say he’s healthy. Then again, a 7.98 ERA doesn’t lie about diminished stuff. If the Orioles can’t do damage against this version of Rodriguez, that’s its own kind of statement about where this offense is right now.

Game 2: Wednesday, 6:35 p.m. Eastern

LAA starter: Reid Detmers – 3-7, 4.03 ERA, 145 SO

BAL starter: Trevor Rogers – 6-7, 4.27 ERA, 89 SO

This is the closest thing this series has to a marquee matchup, and it’s still two left-handers with sub-.500 records and ERAs pushing 4.30. Reid Detmers was most recently in the news for nearly being traded to the Cubs: the return package was already set, apparently, then the deal got nixed at the last minute. So here he, and we are, in a matchup nobody is too excited about. Detmers has exciting swing-and-miss stuff, at least; 145 strikeouts is an impressive number.

Meanwhile, Rogers has been the Orioles’ most trusted arm all year, for better and for worse, and staying off the trade market Monday means Baltimore is banking on him to anchor whatever rotation is left standing.

Game 3: Thursday, 12:35 p.m. Eastern

BAL starter: Brandon Young – 8-2, 3.31 ERA, 85 SO

Young has quietly been the best story in this rotation, which maybe says something about the state of the rotation—but that’s not to take anything away from the big Texan who’s remade his splitter into a true weapon. The Angels’ answer to him is unknown as of this writing.

No way to sugarcoat it: this looks to be a downer of a series. Two sellers, three games and a lot of rotation “TBD”s. What are either of these teams playing for at this point? Maybe for the Orioles, at least, it’s the feeling that they’re soon be building back toward the playoffs, even if it’ll have to wait until next year.

Dodgers’ 2026 Trade Deadline analysis

CHICAGO — The Dodgers made the biggest splash of the Trade Deadline two days before the market closed for the season, swinging a blockbuster deal to acquire two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Tigers.

The trio of trades the Dodgers made before Monday’s 10-5 loss to the Cubs were much more minor in nature, but could still have interesting ripple effects as the back-to-back champions’ title defense intensifies. Here’s a breakdown of what L.A.’s Deadline day activity means for the team:

Call, Lauer remain in Dodger blue
Let’s begin with some trades the Dodgers did not make. Leading up to the Deadline, it seemed likely that they could sell off some pieces who became superfluous as the team got healthier — namely outfielder Alex Call and left-hander Eric Lauer. Ultimately, neither was dealt.

Hanging onto Lauer, in particular, helped the Dodgers make another move on Monday: optioning right-hander Emmet Sheehan, who has struggled for much of the season, to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Sheehan posted a 5.29 ERA through 20 starts, but his spot in the rotation was not at risk up to this point because the Dodgers’ starting-pitching depth was stretched to the limit with injuries to Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Shohei Ohtani.

Lauer had been poised to shift to long relief with Skubal in the fold, and is likely to move to the ‘pen once Snell returns from the injured list next week, but he’ll start against the Cubs on Wednesday. His versatility allowed the Dodgers to take action with Sheehan — and it doesn’t hurt that L.A. has gone undefeated in his nine outings.

“It’s incredibly helpful to make sure that we are balancing regular-season wins — obviously being the most important to win the division and get a bye — while also making sure we’re doing everything we can to maintain health and give guys proper rest whenever we can,” general manager Brandon Gomes said. “I think with the way a lot of these guys are throwing, we have the ability to do that and make sure that we’re not redlining anybody right now and line things up for what we hope is a deep October run.”

Buying low on an injured arm with upside
After the Skubal deal was done, the Dodgers felt no need to make another big addition to their pitching staff. But they did take a rehabbing pitcher who was an All-Star last year, acquiring left-hander Kris Bubic from the Royals.

Bubic is currently on the 60-day injured list. He began the season in the Royals’ rotation, recording a 4.11 ERA through nine starts, before being sidelined with an injury to his left forearm. He sustained soreness in his left shoulder after one rehab start, but was able to go back out on rehab again a couple of weeks later. That second rehab stint was also cut short due to a setback.

By the time the Deadline rolled around, Bubic had progressed to throwing bullpen sessions. The Dodgers will look to build him up as a reliever, a role in which he excelled in 2024, posting a 2.67 ERA in 27 appearances.

Injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2023 and a season-ending rotator cuff strain in ’25, have limited Bubic in the past several years. He is set to become a free agent after this season.

“Biggest thing with Kris is we know what he’s capable of,” Gomes said. “He’s been an All-Star and able to be a dominant force both out of the ‘pen and as a starter. … Our plan right now is to run him out as a reliever and just get him healthy and try to get him back to that version prior to this year, get him fully healthy.”

Old friends behind the plate
The Dodgers’ need for a catcher became much more pronounced when Dalton Rushing was scratched from Sunday’s game and subsequently landed on the IL with right elbow irritation on Monday — especially because the second-year backstop was already filling in for Will Smith, who has missed nearly two months and counting with an inflamed disc in his neck.

So the Dodgers reunited with a pair of familiar faces behind the plate, acquiring Ben Rortvedt from the Mets and Hunter Feduccia from the Rays. Rortvedt appears poised to make the bulk of starts at catcher once he joins the team at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, and Feduccia will likely slot in as his backup.

L.A. is hopeful that the familiarity will help the team navigate the loss of the top two catchers on its depth chart.

Family pushes for answers after 3 people found dead in Rocky Mount home days after electricity cut :: WRAL.com

Rocky Mount police are investigating the deaths of three people found inside a home on King Charles Court on Monday.

Relatives identified a couple found dead inside a mobile home as a married couple, Tracey Swann and Kenny Swann, and 20-year-old Mahala Scurlock, who Tracey had adopted, family members told WRAL News.

Rocky Mount police found the three at 10:45 a.m. on Monday. Investigators are looking into whether a generator was running inside the home, creating dangerous carbon monoxide fumes.

Police said that, while they haven’t determined a cause of death, there appears to be no safety threat to surrounding residents.

“The North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been contacted and will notify the Rocky Mount Police Department regarding the official cause of death,” the police statement said.

Krista Crisp, Tracey Swann’s daughter, told WRAL News that her mother’s electricity had recently been turned off — a detail that, she says, could have played a role in the deaths.

Rocky Mount, which has dealt with billing issues for months, recently started charging customers late fees and shutting off power for some customers who had unpaid bills. Crisp said the family’s utility bill was over $2,000 and her mom was the only one working. She said her mother tried to make partial payments, but said the city would only accept the full amount.

Crisp suspected over the weekend that Tracey Swann might be in trouble. First, Swann failed to show up to a planned family shopping outing on Saturday. Then on Sunday, she didn’t answer the front door when a family member came knocking.

When a family member returned to the Swanns’ residence again Monday, she told Crisp: “I smell death.”

Police forced their way into the home to find the Swanns and Scurlock dead, as well as three dogs.

Rocky Mount’s police chief said on Tuesday that investigators do not suspect foul play.

“We’re looking at every angle,” Rocky Mount Police Chief Martin McCoy Sr. said.

McCoy said the family’s utility billing history is not included in the investigation.

“That would be an issue that the family would have to take up with the utilities department.”

The city of Rocky Mount did not immediately respond to WRAL’s questions about when the power was disconnected, whether the family paid some or all of their balance, and how long it had been since they paid their bill.

Elizabeth Scurlock, Tracey and Kenneth’s niece, told WRAL that she’s still struggling to process the deaths. “They would give you the clothes off their back if they could. They meant — they mean the world to us,” Scurlock said. “This is still very hard for us, and we’re just trying to process this.”
