Zohran Mamdani reportedly barred from speaking at Rampersad funeral

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was reportedly denied the opportunity to speak Friday during the funeral of Army Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad in Queens, one of three U.S. service members killed in Jordan during an Iranian attack on July 17.

Mamdani attended the service at a church in Ozone Park but did not deliver remarks honoring Rampersad.

According to the New York Post, Mamdani appeared to review prepared remarks on an iPad as other dignitaries spoke, but his name was never called.

A source familiar with the funeral told the New York Post that Rampersad’s family chose not to have Mamdani speak in an effort to avoid any “political distractions.”

“It is often said that our fallen ‘gave their tomorrows for our today,'” Mamdani planned to say. “Sergeant Rampersad had tomorrows waiting for her: birthdays, ordinary mornings, evenings spent with her loved ones. But she gave every one of them up so that we could have ours — so that we could stand here today, safe and protected.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, delivered remarks during the service.

“I feel after reading and admiring this woman from a distance, I feel like she could be one of my daughters,” Hochul said.

The Department of War said Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park, New York, was killed in action during an enemy attack at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan.

According to U.S. Central Command, Rampersad and two other U.S. service members were killed while CENTCOM and partner forces “defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks.”

The other two service members killed were identified as 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas. They were deployed to Jordan in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the international campaign against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Rampersad was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 52d Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command in Ansbach, Germany. She served as a 25U Signal Operations Support Specialist, according to the Department of War.

‘Ride or Die’ Tops Streaming Charts, Beating ‘The Hawk’ and ‘Little House on the Prairie’

All eyes were on Prime Video’s buzzy college drama Off Campus this summer. Then this unexpected show arrived and climbed to No. 1 in the United States — handing the streamer another hit nobody saw coming.

Just two weeks after its debut, Ride or Die has become the streamer’s breakout hit of the season. According to Boardroom‘s weekly streaming rankings, sourced via Variety, the show led all originals across streaming for the week of July 17 to July 23 with an estimated 1.6 billion minutes watched, edging out Netflix‘s The Hawk (1.5 billion minutes) and Little House on the Prairie (1.1 billion minutes).

Paramount+’s The Five-Star Weekend and Married at First Sight Season 20 rounded out the top five, with 861.5 million and 713.4 million minutes watched, respectively.

Meet the Characters of Ride or Die

Ride or Die follows Judith Burton, played by Hannah Waddingham, a skilled assassin known within her agency by the code name Whiptail. For two decades, Judith has kept her real profession hidden from her best friend, Debbie Claybourne, played by Octavia Spencer, who believes Judith works as a forensic accountant. When a routine assignment spirals out of control, Judith’s secret life comes crashing into Debbie’s world, forcing the two women into a high-stakes fight for survival neither one saw coming.

Once Debbie learns the truth about her best friend, she’s forced to rethink everything she thought she knew about their bond, and that fractured trust cuts deeper than any shootout or betrayal the show throws at them. The action ramps up considerably in the back half of the season, but the two women’s relationship never loses its footing as the true center of the story.

Report: DeAndre Hopkins to join Georgia Tech coaching staff

After spending some time with the Patriots during training camp, DeAndre Hopkins has found a more permanent job in coaching.

Per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, Georgia Tech is expected to hire Hopkins as a member of the program’s offensive staff.

After departing New England’s training camp, Hopkins has spent time this week visiting with the team.

George Godsey, Georgia Tech’s offensive coordinator, was previously Hopkins’ OC with the Texans from 2015-2016. Godsey was also on last year’s Ravens staff as tight ends coach when Hopkins was with Baltimore.

If this is indeed the end for Hopkins as an NFL player, he’ll finish with 1,006 receptions for 13,295 yards with 85 touchdowns in 195 games over 13 seasons. He had 22 catches for 330 yards with two TDs with the Ravens last year.
