Ex-Gang of Four Bassist Dave Allen Dead at 69

Dave Allen, the founding bass player for the late ‘70s English post-punk group Gang of Four, died on Saturday, April 5. He was 69.
Hugo Burnham, Gang of Four’s original drummer, announced Allen’s death on Sunday, April 6, in a statement through the band’s social media accounts.
“It is with broken yet full hearts that we share the news that Dave Allen, our old music partner, friend and brilliant musician, died on Saturday morning,” Burnham said, “He was with his family.”
Allen experienced early onset mixed dementia for some years, “which has been a heartbreaking time for his wife Paddy, his children and close friends,” added Burnham,
“Our love and thoughts are with them,” he continued.
Formed in Leeds, England, in the mid-1970s during the height of British punk rock, Gang of Four – whose original lineup consisted of Allen, Burnham, singer Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill — became known for their angular-sounding guitar rock and politically-minded confrontational lyrics.
The group’s 1979 debut album, Entertainment!, is regarded as the band’s classic and definitive record, featuring such tracks as “Damaged Goods,” “Not Great Men” and “At Home He’s a Tourist.” In 2023, Rolling Stone named Entertainment! one of its 500 greatest albums of all time.
Allen left Gang of Four in 1982 to form the group Shriekback with Barry Andrews, formerly of the British post-punk group XTC. In later years, Allen was the director of Consumer Digital Audio Services at Intel and worked in artist relations at Apple Music, Stereogum reported.
In 2004, Gang of Four announced a reunion tour featuring the original classic lineup. Both Allen and Burnham later departed the band again and followed by King in 2011, leaving Gill to carry on the Gang of Four name until his death in 2020 at age 64.
The group has been cited as an influence on future generations of acts such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and Franz Ferdinand and the Futureheads.
In 2021, King and Burnham reformed and toured as Gang of Four. Last October, the band lineup of King, Burnham, bassist Gail Greenwood and guitarist Ted Leo announced they were playing a final tour of North America beginning this spring dubbed ‘The Long Goodbye.”

The band’s third album,1982’s Songs of the Free, was recently reissued on Matador Records.
Burnham mentioned in his post on Sunday that he and King visited Allen and his family one afternoon. “We talked and laughed for hours, sharing rich and vivid memories of good times together, adventures, careers in music, raising families, our interwoven lives spanning half a century,” Burnham recalled. “We’ve been so lucky to have had the ace of bass in our lives.”
“We know that Dave would have wanted nothing more than to step onstage with us again in Portland on our farewell U.S. tour,” Burnham continued. “But now it’s a bridge too far.”
“Goodbye old friend,” he concluded.

‘Teen Mom’ ‘s Ryan Edwards Has Heart-to-Heart with Son Bentley in New Home

Ryan Edwards is excited for the opportunity to forge a new relationship with his son.
The Teen Mom: Next Chapter star, 36, shows son Bentley, 16, whom he shares with ex Maci Bookout McKinney, around his new home on the Thursday, April 17 episode of the reality series.
The home is a big move for Edwards and fiancée Amanda Conner, who were excited to treat their blended family to a new start. During that time, Conner regained custody of her 11-year-old son, Brandon, who would also join the couple and their daughter, Presley, in the new family home.
During the tour, Brandon and Bentley can be seen talking about where to put things in the basement. The teen asks Brandon, “What do you think about your mom having a baby?”
“I’m really happy because I’ll have her. I’ll live with my mom,” he said.
“I never really stayed with my dad either, unless it’s at Mimi and Papa’s house,” Bentley told him.

“I’m really looking forward to having a big brother around,” Brandon adds with a big smile, making the teen blush a bit.
Later, Bentley and Ryan step outside for a talk of their own. Ryan tells Bentley, “I’m excited for you. I’m excited for Brandon and Stella and Jagger,” he says, referring to his other two children with ex MacKenzie Standifer.
After joking with Bentley about not sneaking out of the house, Ryan says, “When I was your age, I was most definitely running around. But you’re a good kid, I don’t have to worry about you.”
Ryan then starts to reflect on the fact that Maci was just 16 when they had Bentley. “For the longest, I’ve not been in a good place. And there, for a while, your mama didn’t want us together alone at all. I don’t blame her. Yeah, it made me mad, but I don’t blame her now.”
He continued, “And now, your mom and I get along great. Taylor and I get along. We played golf and I enjoyed it. I wish we would have done it a lot sooner, but like I told Taylor when we was golfing, I wouldn’t have wanted to deal with me then either, so I don’t blame him. And your mama was just protecting you, and I don’t blame her either.”
“Sixteen years later, here we are. I’m sorry it took us so long, but it’s better now than ever,” Ryan says. “I’d love to spend more time with you whenever. And you can come over here because I know we ain’t been able to, but I would enjoy that.”
“I’ve never really gotten to spend a night at a house you’ve been in,” Bentley says.
“I know, And if you’re ever uncomfortable with anything, if you don’t even want to tell me, just tell Mom and she’ll tell me. But just let us know.”
Bentley agrees to do that. Ryan concludes, “I think about this a lot. There were times, you know, that I wasn’t there for you. But I hope, by showing you that it’s a little different… I love you, though.”
“I love you, too,” Bentley says as the two hug.
MTV
Ahead of the big moment, Amanda opened up to Maci about what this move means to her and Ryan, who have each struggled in their relationship with their children as a result of their respective struggles with addiction.
“I’m excited. It’s going to be new, it’s going to be stressful, but we’re all just learning to do this together. So it’s really important for me and Ryan to bond with the kids and have them come over,” she says, asking Maci if she’d be comfortable with Bentley staying there overnight.
“I’m okay with Bentley staying the night. This will honestly, it will be the first time where he goes to where Ryan is living and be happy about it,” she says.
“That makes me happy, but I hate that it was like that,” Amanda says.
