Russia deployed its latest-generation Su-57 stealth fighters to intercept Ukrainian drones during Monday’s attack on the Omsk oil refinery – but the facility was hit despite the effort.

During the attack on Russia’s largest refinery that marked Kyiv’s deepest strike into Russia to date – at over 3,000 kilometers (1,864 miles) from the border – online footage from locals has shown the silhouette of the elusive Su-57 shrieking overhead.

In one such piece of footage shared by the Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+, the channel said the Su-57s managed to down only one drone, while others reached their targets.

In another video shared by Exilenova+, the channel said the jet was hunting down the drones, with the silhouette of the Su-57 faintly visible up in the sky.

The refinery damaged was Russia’s largest, processing 22 million metric tons of crude oil (about 440,000 barrels per day) in 2024 and producing approximately 5 million tons of gasoline and 8 million tons of diesel.

Sources cited by Reuters and Ukrainian monitoring channels confirmed that operations have been halted at the plant, though reports vary as to the extent of damage and the exact refining units struck.

With a known number of around 30 units – falling far short of Moscow’s planned delivery of 76 additional airframes by 2027 – the Su-57s have been among Russia’s most elusive, as they are rarely fielded in combat against Ukraine, presumably due to fears of losing one to Ukrainian forces if intercepted.

The measures are expected to target companies and one person linked to components used in Russian Shahed and Geran drones.

At the same time, military outlet Defense Express, citing a recent report from The War Zone, noted that the latest sighting follows recently publicized photos suggesting the jet’s relegation to anti-drone duties.

In the photos – whose origins remain unknown – the Su-57 was seen fitted with R-73 air-to-air missiles fitted on the wing pylons instead of the internal weapon bay, which would compromise the jet’s stealth capability.

The War Zone also noted a pod containing the 101KS-N electro-optical suite, which the outlet argued could also allow the jet to engage small aerial targets such as drones.

Russia has explored various ways to utilize the Su-57 platform, which include recent reconfigurations – including a two-seater version flight-tested recently – for exports to aid the cash-strapped economy.

An earlier patent for the two-seater version also hinted at an “air command post” function to direct other aircraft, both piloted and uncrewed drones.

The Su-57s were confirmed to have been struck twice throughout Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – once in June 2024 and another in April 2026 – both times on the ground.

The day after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston’s East End, his son spoke about his father’s dedication to his family and said he did not deserve to die.

“He was a hard-working family man who never wanted his name to be known by anyone outside of his family,” Ronaldo Salgado said at a news conference Wednesday morning. “He wanted nothing else in life but to provide for his wife and see his sons become great people.”

In a statement Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, said an agent shot Araujo at approximately 6:50 a.m. Tuesday during a “targeted enforcement operation.” According to DHS, Araujo was from Mexico and did not have legal status in the U.S.

Federal officials claimed Araujo attempted to evade arrest and tried to run over an ICE agent with his vehicle, prompting the agent to shoot Araujo in self-defense, DHS said.

In light of other fatal shootings by ICE officers during the second term of President Donald Trump, whose administration has ramped-up enforcement of immigration laws, local elected officials and civil rights groups have called for independent investigations into the shooting of Araujo.

So has his family.

“You [could] find him every evening after work, resting on his porch, listening to music, petting his dog,” Salgado said. “I am deeply heartbroken to see that the man who taught me the value of hard work, family values, and education will no longer spend an evening on that porch. … He did not deserve to die. He did not deserve to be reduced to a headline of ‘Mexican man shot and killed by ICE.'”

Araujo had lived in the United States for over 30 years and was working his way through the process of obtaining legal immigration status, according to his family.

“He dedicated his life in the United States to giving his family the American dream,” Salgado said. “After nearly 35 years of working to give us the American dream, he made the choice to begin the process of obtaining his American dream through a work permit. We dotted every I, crossed every T, filled every document, attended every appointment.”

U.S. Rep. Christian Menefee, along with half a dozen other elected state and local leaders, joined Araujo’s family on Wednesday.

“I want to be clear, somebody being killed by law enforcement is a big g—— deal,” Menefee said. “What other profession has the power to take somebody’s life in the middle of a street? … We are a city of undocumented immigrants. They are our neighbors. They are our family. They are business owners, and they deserve to be treated with humanity and with dignity.”

On Tuesday, the FBI said the Office of Inspector General for the Department of Homeland Security is leading an investigation into the shooting, while the FBI’s Houston office is leading an investigation into the “potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer.”

Speaking Wednesday, Salgado said three other men were in the vehicle with his father when the shooting occurred.

“All three men were rounded up,” Salgado said. “I have not heard from them, but I hope that they are able to provide their own statements to prove that my father feared for his life as unmarked cars followed my dad, who only wanted to get back to work and back to us.”

ICE had not identified the three other men as of Wednesday afternoon, and the federal agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment about them.

Salgado said his father helped him and his two brothers afford college, adding that Araujo’s hard work inspired them.

“My father was a simple man, a family man,” Salgado said. “That’s how I want the world to know my father. Not as someone who got shot and killed, but as a family man, a man who understood that good things come to those who put in hard work.”

KANSAS CITY – The All-Star Home Run Derby is a week away, but Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper remain undecided if they will participate.

Harper plans to take part in the event if he can find a pitcher he trusts.

Schwarber is expected to participate but won’t fully commit until he’s sure his back will hold up. He missed a game in Washington late last month when his back locked up. He has played every game since Washington.

Both players are expected to finalize their decisions by mid-week.

KELLER SET TO RETURN

The Phillies’ bullpen will receive some reinforcement Tuesday night in Cincinnati when Brad Keller comes off the injured list. The right-hander has recovered from a bout of forearm tendinitis.

Keller pitched two innings of minor-league rehab for Triple-A Lehigh Valley in recent days. He allowed two runs in his first outing but pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout on Sunday.

The Phillies signed Keller to a two-year, $22 million contract over the winter to be one of the primary set-up men for closer Jhoan Duran. He pitched to a 4.15 ERA in 31 games before going on the IL after allowing three hits and three runs in a game at Milwaukee on June 13.

With Keller out, Orion Kerkering has taken some eighth-inning reps and will continue to get the ball in high-leverage situations while Keller eases back in, manager Don Mattingly said.

“I’m definitely comfortable with Kerk anywhere back there,” Mattingly said. “One thing I’ve tried to do in the past, when you get a guy coming off the IL, you’re probably not firing him into a bases-loaded, no-out situation. You try to give him somewhat of a clean inning, a little bit of a softer landing so to speak.”

Either way, the back of the Phillies’ bullpen could use another experienced arm so Keller’s return should provide a boost.
