Does Eagles’ past draft success mean low expectations for free agency?

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles general manager Howie Roseman set the expectations for NFL free agency during a pre-combine session with local reporters in late February.

“From a big-picture perspective, we want to build a team that every year has a chance to compete for championships, that drafts really well and signs their own players, and just sporadically goes into free agency. That’s what we’re trying to do. And sometimes as much as you want to add from outside and you want to change it up, you’ve got to make a decision to keep the players you know, have played well and are part of your culture,” he said.

Nobody likes a splash move more than Roseman — and given his history, it would be foolish to rule one out — but he was setting the stage for a start to the league year on March 11 that will likely be more steak than sizzle from a player-signing standpoint.

It’s the reality for a team that has crushed it in the draft over recent years.

Consider the hit rate in Rounds 1 through 3 from 2021 to 2024.

All of them turned into starters. Three (DeVonta Smith, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens) have signed sizable second contracts with the Eagles, and Williams cashed in last offseason with a megadeal from the New England Patriots, the Eagles opting not to pay that price because of their depth at the position.

Georgia brethren in Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith Jr., Nakobe Dean and Jordan Davis are all eligible for extensions now while the dynamic secondary duo in Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean will be eligible after the 2026 season.

The Eagles also have a number of quality players from their stacked roster poised to hit free agency in the coming days, including edge Jaelan Phillips, Dean, safety Reed Blankenship and tight end Dallas Goedert.

That’s a whole lot of financial considerations for a team that already has much invested in stars such as Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and A.J. Brown, along with its offensive line.

“Can we keep all our guys considering we have, for example, a lot of key defensive players coming off rookie deals in next few years? No, we are going to have to make choices,” Roseman said.

The expectation here is Philadelphia will make a push to re-sign Phillips.

Acquired from the Miami Dolphins before the November trade deadline in exchange for a 2026 third-round draft pick, Phillips helped solidify Philly’s defense over the second half of the season and finished with two sacks, seven QB hits, four passes defensed and four tackles for loss. He was a disruptor against the run and pass, a must for an edge player in Vic Fangio’s scheme.

Phillips is just 26, plays a premium position and has proved to be a system and culture fit, checking boxes the Eagles look for before writing a big check. His injury history could keep his numbers down, but there should be a healthy market for his services. It is yet to be seen whether his value exceeds the Eagles’ walkaway number.

Dean has been a strong player in the middle of the defense when healthy, not to mention a leader for that unit, but could be on the move with Zack Baun and last year’s first-round pick Jihaad Campbell occupying two of the primary linebacker slots. Goedert took a pay cut to stay in Philadelphia last season. If he’s going to cash in on his 11-touchdown season in 2025, the most likely scenario appears to be him doing so elsewhere. Similarly, it’s fair to wonder whether Blankenship will remain within the front office’s price range.

Depending on how these scenarios shake out, the Eagles will have more incentive to add at tight end and safety — two positions that were thin last season even with Blankenship and Goedert in the fold. Philadelphia will have opportunities in free agency and April’s draft to address those needs.

The other spot that stands out is offensive line. The group underperformed last season, largely due to injury. Some uncertainty followed with Lane Johnson and Dickerson both contemplating retirement this offseason. A smart play would be to bolster their depth in the trenches with modest signings in free agency and be on the lookout for eventual long-term replacements at guard and tackle through the draft.

Roseman noted that with the continual rise in the league’s salary cap, teams have done a good job of late retaining their own players. The effect is fewer difference-makers who reach free agency.

That’s all the more reason to focus on their draft, develop and re-sign model, which has served them well in recent years.

“That doesn’t mean that we can’t do splashy things, but from a broad perspective, if we can keep our players, if we can keep a lot of these young, really good players that we know that we live with, so we know who they are as people, and then it’s like a cake, it’s like a layer cake,” Roseman said. “Then you build on top of it with more good draft picks and more good young players, and then the cycle starts again.”

La Junta Directiva del FC Barcelona se ha reunido hoy, miércoles 29 de julio, en sesión ordinaria en las instalaciones del Club, bajo la presidencia del vicepresidente primero, Rafael Yuste, en ausencia del presidente Joan Laporta, quien ha excusado su asistencia.

Durante la reunión se ha tratado, como uno de los puntos del orden del día, la posibilidad de celebrar una única Asamblea Ordinaria de Socios y Socias Compromisarios, que habitualmente tiene lugar durante el mes de octubre, incluyendo también aquellos asuntos previstos para la Asamblea Extraordinaria que requieren la aprobación de los socios y socias compromisarios.

Para hacerlo posible, el Club está adelantando el proceso de cierre de las cuentas correspondientes a la temporada 2025-26, así como la elaboración del presupuesto de la temporada 2026-27, con el objetivo de incluirlo todo en un mismo orden del día, en una única convocatoria y una única Asamblea, la cual previsiblemente se pueda celebrar el mes de septiembre.

Esta fórmula supondría una mayor comodidad para los socios y socias compromisarios y, al mismo tiempo, un importante ahorro de recursos organizativos y económicos.

En este sentido, durante la reunión de hoy, la Junta Directiva ha conocido una primera estimación del cierre económico de la temporada. Las cuentas se encuentran actualmente en fase de revisión y validación por parte del auditor y, una vez finalice este proceso, el Club podrá convocar la Asamblea Ordinaria y, si se dan las condiciones para ello, hacerla coincidir con la Asamblea Extraordinaria.

La decisión definitiva se tomará próximamente. El objetivo del Club es que esta Asamblea se celebre durante el mes de septiembre y, siempre que sea posible, coincida con un día de partido.

Por otra parte, en lo que respecta al área deportiva, la Junta Directiva está ultimando la celebración de un partido amistoso del primer equipo masculino el próximo 15 de agosto en Tánger (Marruecos), frente a un equipo local.

Asimismo, la Junta también ha tratado la posibilidad de que el Barça Femenino dispute un partido amistoso el mismo 15 de agosto frente al Manchester City en el estadio del conjunto inglés.

La Junta Directiva también ha repasado la situación de las diferentes áreas deportivas del Club y ha sido informada de la inminente incorporación de una nueva jugadora al primer equipo de fútbol femenino, que será comunicada una vez se formalice definitivamente la operación.

En el ámbito deportivo, la Junta también ha ratificado el proyecto de unificación de la estructura del Barça Atlètic con la del primer equipo, con el objetivo de lograr una gestión más ágil, eficiente y coordinada desde los puntos de vista deportivo, económico y operativo.

Por último, la Junta Directiva ha sido informada de la evolución de las obras del Spotify Camp Nou y de los trabajos previstos de cara al inicio de la próxima temporada.

Overland couple killed in Guatemala after being deported by ICE

An Overland couple who had recently returned to Guatemala was found bound and shot to death in a sugarcane field.

Nixon Giovanni Pérez Paz and Glendy Marisol González de la Cruz were killed weeks after González de la Cruz self-deported to be with her husband, who was deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last year.

Their 14-month-old daughter, Giovanni, was found crying beside her mother’s body in southern Guatemala. The child showed signs of dehydration and was taken to a medical center, where she is recovering, according to Guatemalan news outlet ABC Stereo.

Guatemala’s National Civil Police told local news outlets that Pérez Paz, 43, and González de la Cruz, 25, had been gagged and had their hands and feet bound. Authorities said both showed signs of physical trauma. Prosecutors are investigating the killings.

“I felt that they took the thing I wanted most,” said Rolando Pérez Paz, Pérez Paz’s 51-year-old brother, in an interview with STLPR. “I felt a huge pain because it was my brother, my sister-in-law — people that wanted to work, to fight.”

The couple was reported missing July 20 after leaving home to register a motorcycle in a nearby town, according to Rolando Perez Paz. The deaths followed several months of struggles with financial hardships, run-ins with the federal government and violence.

In the early hours one morning last April, Pérez Paz was driving his 51-year-old brother, Rolando Pérez Paz, to their roofing jobs when they were stopped near their home by ICE.

A group of agents exited an unmarked vehicle and swarmed them, taking them out of their white work van and later putting them in handcuffs and shackles before taking them to the Phelps County Jail, since-deported Rolando Pérez Paz told St. Louis Public Radio on Monday from his home in Guatemala.

The agents didn’t explain much other than telling him there wasn’t a warrant out for their arrests but that they were being arrested for entering the county illegally and that they would be deported.

The two men were in the country without legal status, fleeing violence and poverty from the Central American country, said Rolando Perez Paz.

An ICE spokesperson confirmed the stop and arrest in Overland when agents located and arrested Pérez Paz for “being unlawfully present in the United States.”

The spokesperson said he was convicted twice for drunken driving in Overland and put on four years’ probation, but no records appear in the Missouri court database to support that account. ICE also pointed to a 2010 open-container charge against Pérez Paz in Palm Beach, Florida — an ordinance violation that prosecutors dropped.

“Since Day One, DHS law enforcement has been delivering on President Trump’s promise to the American people to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens including murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang members, and terrorists,” the spokesperson wrote in a late Monday email. “ICE remains committed to removing criminal aliens from our communities by enforcing immigration laws and maintaining the integrity of our borders.”

Overland Police Chief Andy Mackey said the department was not involved in the two men’s stop, detention and deportation last year. In an unrelated May 2024 incident, court records show Pérez Paz had pleaded guilty to driving without a valid driver’s license after being pulled over by Overland police and subsequently paid the roughly $200 fine.

When reached by phone on Monday, David Diamond, Pérez Paz’s Brentwood-based traffic attorney listed on the 2024 court docket, declined to answer questions about his former client and did not invoke attorney-client privilege — an ethical guideline to keep many conversations confidential with clients. When STLPR informed Diamond that Pérez Paz had been shot and killed alongside his wife, he said it “doesn’t matter” before hanging up.

González de la Cruz remained in Overland, where she gave birth to the couple’s third daughter in June 2025. She worked two manual labor jobs while raising their children but eventually decided to return to Guatemala with her girls as financial pressures mounted — and grew increasingly fearful that she would be detained and separated from them despite working through an active asylum case, according to organizers with Fuerza, a St. Louis-based immigrant rights group she was a part of.

“I think this is indicative of the problem and the broken process,” said Zachary Mueller, a Kansas City-based strategist at States at the Core, a nonprofit helping local communities fight authoritarianism and political violence. “It belies that idea that any of this is about public safety because now two people are dead and three young girls are without parents for the rest of their lives.”

Rolando Pérez Paz said he is caring for Nixon and Glendy’s three young daughters in Guatemala but has had difficulty explaining the deaths to them.

“If immigration hadn’t picked up my brother, my sister-in-law would still be alive, and the children wouldn’t be going through this sorrow,” he said. “Unfortunately, immigration — the [U.S.] government — doesn’t see that. It makes no difference to them.”

A spokesperson for ICE, Guatemala’s National Civil Police and Overland Mayor Marty Little did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A candlelight vigil for the couple is planned at Overland City Hall at 6 p.m. Aug. 2.

Costco $14M settlement: Washington shoppers may receive up to $500

Costco shoppers in Washington may be eligible to receive a cash payout after the retailer agreed to settle a class action lawsuit accusing the retailer of sending misleading promotional emails advertising limited-time offers.

The lawsuit alleges Costco violated Washington’s Commercial Electronic Mail Act (CEMA), which regulates commercial email marketing.

Under CEMA, recipients may recover up to $500 per qualifying email. However, the actual payout from the settlement is currently unknown and will depend on the number of valid claims submitted.

While denying any wrongdoing, Costco agreed to pay $14 million to settle the lawsuit, Aaland v. Costco Wholesale Corp.

Washington residents whose email addresses are in Costco’s records and who received the promotional emails between June 2021 and July 2026 may be eligible to file a claim.

To receive a share of the settlement, eligible class members must submit a claim form by Aug. 24, 2026.

According to the lawsuit, Costco allegedly violated state law by sending commercial emails with deceptive subject lines that created a false sense of urgency by advertising limited-time offers that plaintiffs allege the retailer intended to extend beyond the advertised promotional period.

Examples of the subject lines cited in the lawsuit include “Today is the last day to access Member-Only Savings” and “Hot Buys available for 5 Days Only.”

The net proceeds of the $14 million settlement will be distributed equally among class members who submit valid claims after court-approved attorneys’ fees, litigation costs and service awards are deducted. The exact payout per person remains unknown because it will depend on the total number of approved claims.

Each class member may submit only one claim form, regardless of how many qualifying promotional emails they received from Costco.

Individuals may also choose to opt out of the settlement to preserve their right to sue separately or object to its terms by Aug. 24.

Those who take no action will receive no compensation and will be barred from pursuing future legal claims related to the allegations covered by the settlement.

The court will decide whether to grant final approval to the settlement on Oct. 2, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. PT in Seattle.
