The WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz’s Grass-Court Swing will continue with the Bad Homburg Open. Alongside the WTA 250 Eastbourne Open, the WTA 500 event is the tune-up tournament for Wimbledon.

Previously a WTA 250 event, Bad Homburg will host its third tournament at the 500 level, and features a star-studded lineup including three Grand Slam champions.

From dates, draws, prize money and more, here’s everything you need to know about Bad Homburg.

What are the dates for each round?

Main-draw play for both the singles and doubles draws begins on Sunday, June 21, and singles qualifying will take place on Saturday, June 20.

The finals will take place on Saturday, June 27, beginning with the doubles championship at 11 a.m. local time (10 a.m. BST, 5 a.m. EST). The singles final will follow, not before 1:30 p.m. local time.

Singles

First round: June 21-22
Second round: June 23-24
Quarterfinals: June 25
Semifinals: June 26
Final: June 27

Doubles

First round: June 21-23
Quarterfinals: June 24-25
Semifinals: June 26
Final: June 27

How big is the draw, and who are the top players in the field?

There will be a 28-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw in Bad Homburg.

The singles draw will feature 19 direct entries, four wild cards, four qualifiers and one special exemption. The top four players will have a bye. Four top 10 players headline the field, and all direct entrants are currently ranked in the top 30 of the PIF WTA Rankings.

Top 10 players: (3) Iga Swiatek, (5) Mirra Andreeva, (8) Elina Svitolina, (10) Karolina Muchova

Swiatek, who made the final here last year, and Andreeva are set to begin their grass seasons at the event, while Svitolina will attempt to get through to the quarterfinals for the first time in three tries.

Defending champion Jessica Pegula is not scheduled to compete at this year’s tournament.

Linda Noskova, Naomi Osaka, 2024 champion Diana Shnaider, Iva Jovic and Ekaterina Alexandrova are among the top 20 players in the fold.

Wild cards: Alexandra Eala, Eva Lys, Venus Williams and Zheng Qinwen

Williams will play her first match since Madrid, and following Bad Homburg she will partner with Serena Williams in the Wimbledon doubles draw.

Withdrawals: Elena Rybakina, Sorana Cirstea (knee), Hailey Baptiste (knee), Cristina Bucsa (wrist)

Moved into main draw: Wang Xinyu

Wang moved into the draw Tuesday after Bucsa pulled out. (Bucsa had moved in following Cirstea’s withdrawal.)

Who are the defending champions?

After an early exit in Berlin the week prior, then-No. 3 Pegula bounced back in Bad Homburg, defeating Swiatek 6-4, 7-5 for her second career grass-court title. The win gave Pegula a title on every surface in 2025, after Pegula won in Austin and Charleston earlier in the season.

Pegula needed three sets to win her quarterfinal and semifinal matches against Emma Navarro and Noskova, respectively, but handled the final with more ease, winning in 1 hour and 46 minutes. She only faced one break point in the match.

In doubles, Guo Hanyu and Alexandra Panova won the second WTA 500 title of their respective careers with a 4-6, 7-6 (4), [10-5] comeback against No. 2 seeds Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez. Their first title had come in Adelaide in January of that year.

Jarrett Bell has been covering the NFL for USA TODAY since 1993 and is a recipient of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Bill Nunn Memorial Award for career achievement. He’s been a member of Hall of Fame selection committee since 1997 and has voted on AP awards and Super Bowl MVP panels for more than 25 years. Each Monday during the 2026 season, he’ll take you around the league as only he can to uncover what mattered most and what it means.

Jahmyr Gibbs has yet to christen his new record contract by ripping off his first explosive run in live action or by burning a defense with a scintillating catch in the open field.

Just wait. Barring some disaster, it’s coming.

And when it does, the big-play Detroit Lions star may have already outplayed his contract.

Gibbs, 24, became the highest-paid running back in NFL history this month in striking a 3-year, $67.5 million extension that averages $22.5 million per year.

It was the third deal of the summer for a running back averaging at least $22 million, edging past Bijan Robinson’s 3-year, $66.75 million pact with the Falcons and the 2-year, $44 million extension for the Colts’ Jonathan Taylor. The trio joins Saquon Barkley in the $20-mil-plus running back club.

So, yes, Gibbs can take a bow to lead the pack.

But by another measure, the fourth-year pro is still rather underpaid. According to rankings posted on Spotrac.com, there are 24 wide receivers averaging more on their contracts than Gibbs, which doesn’t seem right. Gibbs was second in the NFL with 18 TDs and fifth with 1,839 yards from scrimmage.

And it was no anomaly. Taylor led the league with 20 TDs and was third in scrimmage yards (1,963). Robinson topped the NFL with 2,298 yards, while San Francisco’s Christian McCaffrey ($19 million per year) was second with 2,126 yards and third with 17 TDs.

Yet for all of their heavy-duty workload – and with their expansive roles in the passing game as multiple-dimensional threats – running backs still get the short of it.

This is hardly a new pattern. For decades as the NFL evolved into a passing league, running backs have been devalued. There’s the argument about diminishing returns. They don’t last as long. Yet as the position has evolved with the game, their value hasn’t evolved proportionally.

“I don’t think it should be like a positional thing,” Gibbs told USA TODAY Sports following a recent camp practice at the Lions headquarters in Allen Park, Mich. “I think it should be like worth. What’s your value to that team? That’s how I think it should go.

“It doesn’t really make any sense. I get it because the running back lifespan in the NFL is what, three or four years? But you have elites still getting paid less than…compared to the rest of the positions it was low, even though we do a lot for a team.”

On some teams, the gap is glaring. While Robinson was briefly the highest-paid running back before Gibbs, his new deal is nowhere close to the contract Falcons receiver Drake London received that averages $35.26 million. In Baltimore, Zay Flowers landed a $35 million-per-year pact that more than doubles the $15 million average for Derrick Henry.

“The market analysis part, that’s a big driving force in all these negotiations,” Lions GM Brad Holmes told USA TODAY Sports. “With these new contracts with Jahmyr, Bijan and Jonathan Taylor, they’re starting to creep up there. They’re not there yet.”

In another sense, though, running back value has decreased at an alarming rate – despite the contracts at the top of the market.

Joel Corry, a former agent and contract expert, points to the NFL’s salary cap for proof. The cap, set at a record $301.2 million for 2026, was at $120.735 million after the lockout ended in 2011.

“The salary cap has gone up 150% since then,” Corry told USA TODAY Sports. “The top of the running back market has gone up 58% since then. Running back salaries have not kept up with the growth of the cap.”

Corry, who contributes to CBS Sports’ digital channel and website, pointed out that Vikings star Adrian Peterson was the highest-paid running back in 2011 with an average salary of $14.2 million, while Larry Fitzgerald topped receivers at slightly more than $16 million per year. So 15 years ago the top running back earned 90% of what the top receiver was paid. Now, with Seattle’s Jaxson Smith-Njigba averaging $42.15 million on his new deal, the highest-paid running back, Gibbs, is a little more than 50% of the top receiver pay.

How can the elite backs close that gap? It’s a tough sell, especially with the top backs signed to long-term extension and attrition a factor.

Maybe the best argument for the best players, though, can be made by reclassifying them as “offensive weapons” rather than merely running backs.

Then again, that negotiating stance certainly isn’t a novel idea.

“That’s an argument that falls on deaf ears,” Corry said. “I’m sure multiple agents have tried to make that argument with dual-threat running backs. Good luck with that one.”

Also, as the NFL rolls down the stretch run of preseason:

What stood out: Cleveland QB edition

Since kicking off the offseason program on April 14, new Browns coach Todd Monken has had exactly 38 practices – that’s 6 minicamp practices, 3 rookie minicamp practices, 10 OTA sessions, 18 training camp practices and 1 joint practice – and two preseason games to lay eyes on Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson and collect intel for the big decision on his starting quarterback that could come down (finally) as early as Monday.

Monken has also had many hours of meetings with his QBs and staff, plus even more hours of videotape study. You’d think he’s got enough to make the call.

And if he needed another factor, the Huntington Bank Field crowd gave their opinion by showering Watson with a chorus of boos during the Saturday tilt against the Bills.

“I know you’ve asked him, ‘Hey, how’s it feel to get booed?’ It’s a pretty easy question. It sucks,” Monken said during his postgame media session. “I don’t want to get booed. It comes with the territory. You don’t want to get booed? Let’s play good football.”

No, that didn’t happen as Watson was disastrous during a second-half run low-lighted by two picks. And given how Sanders was much smoother and productive during the first half it would be a shock if Watson is named the starter.

Then his post-game newser put an exclamation point on that, as Watson vented about the Browns fan base. No doubt, it was cruel that home fans cheered when Watson suffered a torn Achilles tendon in 2024. But Watson hurt his rep even more, and after a poor performance, by clapping back at the fans.

So, on the awareness meter, Sanders scored even more points with his graceful response to a question about the booing of his teammate and competitor.

“In general, I don’t appreciate that at all,” Sanders said during his post-game media session. “Regardless of competition, we’re all human beings. I think we all need to understand that. In this room, too, we’re all humans.

“It’s a respect thing,” he added. “It’s a respect thing that I feel should be there because we’re all out there trying to do our best and serve the franchise the best way possible.”

Spoken like, well, an evolving face of the franchise.

Browns QB Shedeur Sanders suggested fans should have more empathy for Deshaun Watson, who was booed by fans during an Aug. 21 game against the Bills.

What moved me

Ultimately, the legacy of O.J. Brigance went so far beyond football. Sure, as the leader of the Ravens special teams units, he fittingly made the first tackle of Super Bowl 35 on the opening kickoff. He had the distinction, too, of being the only player to win a Super Bowl and a Grey Cup while representing the same city, Baltimore.

Yet his defining legacy comes in more human terms, wrapped in the determined spirit Brigance demonstrated for so many years as he battled ALS – and remained active with the Ravens despite limited physical abilities.

The team announced the death of Brigance, 56, last Monday.

After being diagnosed with ALS in 2007, Brigance, who worked as the player development director following his playing days, kept an office at the team’s headquarters and continued connecting with those relationships. He regularly attended practices, too.

Never mind that Brigance used a motorized wheelchair and eye-tech technology to communicate after losing his ability to speak. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, attacks the nervous system as has no known cure.

“It was as if he didn’t have the disease,” Ozzie Newsome, the former GM and current executive vice president, told USA TODAY Sports. “He was in a wheelchair, but everything he had done prior to the disease, he still continued to do it.”

Newsome said that during his GM tenure, Brigance provided a crucial benefit built on relationships developed with players he consulted on myriad off-the-field matters. “He was unbelievable with that, the trust he gained with those guys, while never compromising his responsibility to the Ravens,” reflected Newsome, who built two separate Super Bowl championship teams. “He was an unbelievable help for me in that sense, because of the way players reacted to him. When he contracted ALS, it didn’t stop him, which is amazing, the impact he continued to have with players.”

Before moving from the DMV area a few years ago, I covered dozens of Ravens home games, typically sitting a few feet away from Brigance as his wheelchair was positioned at the end of the front row of the press box. Although he suffered with his condition, he would show something else with bright eyes and a wide smile when approached with a greeting. I can imagine how much more he impacted those at the Ravens headquarters – players and staffers alike – who encountered him on a regular basis.

“When you have a teammate putting in maximum effort every day, it encourages everybody else,” Newsome said. “‘If he can do it, why can’t I be better at what I’m doing?’ And inspiration to all of us.”

What stood out: Denver QB edition

Check the box for Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, who took 14 snaps over two series against the Packers on Friday night in his first live action since suffering a fractured right ankle in an AFC divisional playoff win in January. He was fluid, efficient and accurate.

“It was like riding a bike. It doesn’t really change,” Nix, who dropped a rainbow to finish off R.J. Harvey’s wheel route for 21-yard TD pass and posted a 129.9 passer rating with his limited work, said during his post-game press conference.

No, Nix – whose 83 rushes last season tied for fifth-most among quarterbacks – didn’t run from scrimmage. But there was no question about his mobility. And he previewed an added dimension for Denver’s offense, timing up for a 35-yard hook-up with Jaylen Waddle, the biggest offseason acquisition.

Nix said the biggest challenge was mental, as in re-aligning his vision under game conditions. With Broncos coach Sean Payton looking to play starters into the third quarter against Minnesota on Friday night – albeit not committing how he’ll use his QB – it appears Nix could still get a round of more extensive work before the Monday night opener at Kansas City.

“I’d like to play as much as I can,” he said of another possible preseason tuneup, “but I have no control over that.”

Regardless, Nix, who also had a clean-up procedure after his initial surgery, sounds ready for Week 1. “I’ve played a lot of football,” he said. “I think I could walk in any game and be fine.”

What stood out: Pittsburgh QB edition

If you thought Steelers coach Mike McCarthy might be tempted to cast off seventh-year pro Mason Rudolph and roll with a pair of young developmental quarterbacks to back up 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers, scratch that idea. Pittsburgh was shut out by the Jets on Friday night as second-year pro Will Howard and third-round rookie Drew Allar split the workload – and illustrated that it’s not-so-fast in making Rudolph expendable.

Howard started and played the entire first half, with two picks; Allar didn’t commit a turnover in his second half of work but also completed fewer than half his passes (11 of 23) and was sacked three times.

McCarthy knows. Developing QBs takes time. And now it’s time for a good spin.

“We got great teaching film,” McCarthy said during his post-game news conference, eyeing the final camp practices on Monday and Tuesday before the preseason finale at Buffalo on Thursday.

“I wish we’d have been more productive,” he added. “We’ll definitely have an opportunity to grow.”

Best thing I saw on social media

Hated that ESPN recently dropped Damien Woody from its lineup of NFL analysts.

Loved that Woody, who won two Super Bowls with the Patriots during a 12-year career in the NFL trenches, says he will still unload some things on his mind when so moved.

The former O-lineman dropped a gem of a video commentary with a post on X, responding to the brawl between the Cowboys and Saints – which resulted in the NFL fining the teams a combined $1 million – that was one of a series of fights breaking out across the league during joint and even non-joint camp practices.

Said Woody: “I’ve always said, man, if you’ve got the energy to brawl in practice, then practice is not hard enough. It’s absolutely ridiculous to be grabbing people’s helmets, throwing them off, twisting and slamming people, ‘Suplex-ing’ people. Like how in the world do you have that much energy to go out and do that stuff? It’s stupid.

“The one thing I’ve always said about football: Football is one of the few places where I get to assault another individual for three hours. That’s on game day. No need to do that in training camp. Stop the nonsense.”

Well-said, D-Woody. And please, keep speaking your mind.

Clip-N-Save: Maxx Crosby trade talk won’t stop

Maxx Crosby is not on the market anymore. But never say never.

I mean, let somebody dangle a pair of first-round picks again and see what happens.

After Crosby’s offseason adventure of being traded from the Raiders to the Ravens for two first-round picks – only to have the deal nixed when Baltimore didn’t pass the premier edge rusher on a physical – it seemed fitting as camp opened that buzz intensified about the Dallas Cowboys dealing for him.

Noise about that scenario quickly died down, and since then the Cowboys signed free agent Von Miller for pass-rush needs. But there are 30 other teams out there. And listening carefully to Raiders GM John Spytek during the first week in camp makes me wonder.

When Spytek was asked whether Crosby is definitely a Raider this year, he replied, “That’s the plan.”

Yet Spytek also acknowledged that he’s heard from teams inquiring about Crosby, who has recovered from offseason surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

“I always get calls,” Spytek said. “There’s always calls. You guys know that.”

We also suspect that if he remains healthy, Crosby’s name will be hot – especially on debate shows – as circumstances dictate. The trade deadline is Nov. 10.

“People do what they do,” Spytek said. “I’m just trying to make the Raiders as good as possible. Right now, Maxx is here and I have every intention that Maxx will be here.”

Right now.

Closing Bell

A final word from Hall of Fame cornerback Ty Law, a three-time Super Bowl winner, on why he worked through a tight travel schedule to make it Canton and show up for former Patriots teammate Adam Vinatieri’s induction:

“I had to be here,” Law said. “If he doesn’t make those clutch kicks, the resumes for a whole lot of us look a lot different.”

5 takeaways from Arizona State’s latest football scrimmage

91187397007 asu football practice 0001493

The Sept. 5 season opener against Morgan State is fast approaching. Coach Kenny Dillingham’s Arizona State Sun Devils scrimmaged at Mountain America Stadium on Aug. 22.

“You could see the last 30 minutes, the offense went on really, really good drives running the football, so I thought that was a positive,” Dillingham said afterward. “Defense had an unbelievable interception early in the scrimmage, and that was an unbelievable play. So that was good to see. Still only one takeaway.

“I’d like to see more takeaways created by the defense, but kudos to the offense. It was like the first scrimmage, very, very similar again. Offense moves the ball. Defense doesn’t allow big plays. The difference tonight was the offense hit a couple of big plays.”

Here are some takeaways from the nearly two-hour session.

Special teams were solid

The Sun Devils have two kickers and two punters competing for jobs. When it comes to placekicking, both Carson Smith and Carston Kieffer made 52-yard field goals. Although Kieffer’s just barely cleared, Smith’s made it with a few yards to spare. Smith also made a 38-yarder late in the scrimmage.

Junior incumbent Kanyon Floyd and senior Nick McLarty, a 6-foot-7 transfer from Ohio State, are battling for the punter spot. The two combined for five kicks, all of which went for between 42 and 50 yards and landed inside the 20. Floyd got particularly good hang time on his kicks.

Wide receiver Jaren Hamilton was the primary return man.

“Our special teams battles have been awesome,” Dillingham said. “Both of our guys are punting better. We’re consistently getting 44- to 48-yard punts and 4.4 or more hang, which is what you want, so that has shown up.”

Defenders pressured the passers

ASU’s edge rushers appear to be a strong suit this season.

Joshua Shanklin and Emar’rion Winston each had two sacks. Roman Pitre and Tristan Bacon each had one. Most of those came with the defenders getting the better of the offensive tackles.

“We have to get better at pass protection stuff so we can throw the football,” Dillingham said. “Right now that’s not good, but that’s part of the way we play defense. There’s some back-and-forth with that. We’ve got some depth at edge. That shows up in the pass rush.”

Tight ends struggled again

This is a position Dillingham called out earlier in the week. He was so disappointed with the effort in practice that he moved defensive end Clayton Smith there to create some competition.

The showing wasn’t much better. Tight ends especially struggled with blocking assignments, which allowed the defensive ends to get into the pocket, pressure the quarterbacks and contain the running backs.

Of course, the Sun Devils’ best tight end, Khamari Anderson, is still working his way back from a broken leg.

Running backs were solid

Much has been made of the balance and depth ASU has in the backfield, and it was on full display. Some of the players who appear to be further down the depth chart had some solid runs, most notably Jason Brown and Demarius “Man Man” Robinson. True freshman Cardae Mack also had some runs that moved a pile of defenders.

Running backs were also involved in the passing game.

Another back lower on the depth chart, sophomore Grayson Rigdon, hauled in an 80-yard scoring pass from Mikey Keene, which was the longest play of the night.

Other notes

Dillingham announced sophomore defensive back Nigel Pringle will be out with a season-ending injury sustained in the scrimmage at Camp Tontozona a week ago. He is a transfer from Arkansas in his first year in the program. He is the second player to sustain a season-ending injury, the other being lineman My’Keil Gardner, who tore an Achilles.

Jadarian Price ‘A Special Player,’ Ty Okada’s Big Play & Other Observations From The Seahawks’ Joint Practice With The Titans

NASHVILLE—For the third straight year under head coach Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks hit the road for a joint practice, taking the field with the Titans on Friday for the second session of joint practice in the past three years with Tennessee.

“Going into today, our goal was to get great work; I think we accomplished that goal,” Macdonald said. “It’s an awesome opportunity to have a pretty heavy practice in this heat and humidity—I think they said it’s a little bit cooler than it’s been here, which is kind of crazy—so we had some guys down with some cramps and things like that, but overall, a great work day.”

In addition to some unfortunate injury news regarding receiver Jake Bobo, here are six observations from Friday’s practice:

1. After missing a bit of camp with an injury, Jadarian Price is back and showing that he’s “a really special player.’

Jadarian Price, Seattle’s first-round pick in this year’s draft, missed a bit of camp due to what Macdonald described as upper-leg soreness, has been back on the field throughout the past week following the team’s preseason opener, and on Friday, the rookie back put on display some of what has the Seahawks so excited about his game.

Price had a nice over-the-shoulder catch for a big gain early in practice in a seven-on-seven drill, then later in 11-on-11, he broke off a big run, taking a run through a nice hole up the middle before bouncing the run outside to get to the sideline.

“He’s a special player,” said quarterback Sam Darnold. “He’s a really special player. He brings a different facet to the offense that only a guy like him can bring. Whether it’s catching passes out of the backfield, catching screens, running in between the tackles, outside of the tackles, he can really do it all. And I know he’s just going to continue to get better and learn.”

Price had multiple catches in the practice, and was one of several running backs showing up in the passing game, including Velus Jones Jr., who had multiple catches, including a touchdown from Jalen Milroe, and George Holani, who had a touchdown reception in a red zone drill, getting open on a wheel route out of the backfield before making an over-the-shoulder catch on a well-placed pass from Darnold.

“They’re doing a great job out of the backfield,” Darnold said of the running backs’ pass-catching ability. “Even when they’re not out of the backfield, in the slot, being able to catch and do all the things we ask them to do. Obviously in camp, things happen, receivers go down, tight ends go down, fullbacks go down, and those running backs have been able to just step up in whatever position we ask them to play. They’ve been very versatile all camp, and really, really good catching the ball out of the backfield or even in the slot or out wide.”

2. Ty Okada had the play of the day on defense with a pick six.

Safety Ty Okada had the play of the day on the defensive side of the ball in Friday’s practice with a pick six of Titans quarterback Cam Ward. On a ball that was intended for receiver Carnell Tate, the interception was thanks to a good read by Okada.

“I was coming down over the middle, tried to get him to get his eyes off of me and then on a crossing route was just able to read it and play off of him and go out there and make a play,” Okada said.

After Okada heard the play call, he knew that he had a chance to go and make a play.

“We’re able to give the quarterback a different read and a different look on that play, so it was a great call by Coach Mike (Macdonald),” Okada said. “I was just able to take advantage of it, which was nice.”

This play was another example of how he was able to earn a starting role last season, in place of injured players.

“It’s me versus me every single day,” he said. “I want every single DB in the DB room in Seattle to be the best versions of themselves day in and day out. And if we all do that, we’re going to continue to grow as a group and that’s only going to further help the defense and the team. And so ultimately, it’s just me looking in the mirror and trying to grow any way that I can on and off the field.”

3. Practice did get a little chippy for a few brief moments, but for the most part both teams handled themselves well.

As is the case for a lot of joint practices, the play on the field did get a little chippy at times, but it was nothing too serious and Macdonald said he thought the Seahawks handled it “really well today” and there was a lot of value for the starters in Friday’s practice.

“There’s going to be some excess energy at some point, but it’s how well you kind of collect yourself, take a deep breath and get to the next play,” he said. “So our guys knew that it was really important for us today to get great work in. And so that was really our focus. And I think we hit that target for the most part, which is great. And we got a lot of reps in. If you play starters in a preseason game, you’re looking at maybe upwards of 20 reps, but now you’re getting upwards of 40 or 50 really good physical reps, but in a more controlled environment, which is a positive for everybody. But you got to nail the execution. It takes both clubs to work together. It takes both teams to work together. There’s a lot of logistics involved. And so that’s why I think why I’m so pleased is just it took everybody kind of pushing in the same direction to get it done today.”

There was talk amongst players and messaging from coaches about making the most of the practice.

“There were some reminders,” Okada said. “But it was more just about ‘Hey this is important work and we need these reps, we can’t waste time.’ It was good that it didn’t go to where it needed to go.”

Jones added, “We didn’t come here to fight, man. I’ve been telling guys, we came here to work, man. We want good work. We want to see where we’re at, see where our defense is at, see where our offense is at.”

4. Rashid Shaheed showed some serious toughness.

Literally every day of camp could have an observation about Jaxon Smith-Njigba being basically impossible to defend, and that was true again Friday, with Smith-Njigba making several nice catches, including an over-the-shoulder catch on a deep ball from Sam Darnold, but plenty of other receivers also deserve having the spotlight on the work they’re doing in camp, including Rashid Shaheed.

Shaheed had a number of catches to continue what has been a strong camp, but one thing he put on display Friday that he hasn’t been able to in practice—because Seahawks players take care of their teammates in practice—is some serious toughness.

Attempting to make a catch over the middle, Shaheed was blasted by Titans cornerback Alontae Taylor, who lowered his helmet before leaving his feet to deliver a hard blow to Shaheed’s chest. Shaheed stayed down for a few moments in obvious pain, but was quickly back in action. Shaheed made a nice catch on the sideline a few plays later for a first down, then held the ball up before dropping it at the feet of Titans players on their sideline.

“I would like to not put a receiver in a situation like that, but I also would have thought the DB wouldn’t have hit him,” Darnold said.

Darnold said Shaheed told him, while still on the ground, that he got the wind knocked out of him, and which point Darnold could relax a bit, saying, “All right, you’re good.”

“When he confirmed that, I felt a lot better,” Darnold said. “Not that I want to continue to do that, but he showed a lot of toughness.”

A few plays later, Velus Jones Jr., perhaps remembering the hard hit his teammate had received moments earlier, took a run to the left sideline, turned the corner, then lowered his shoulder and to level safety Jerrick Reed II with a blow that knocked the former Seahawk clear off of his feet and sent him tumbling over backwards.

5. Mike Macdonald thought there were some good and not so good things about how the defense practiced.

While the Seahawks had some good plays like the aforementioned Okada pick-six, or a Josh Jobe pass breakup in the endzone they also had plays they probably wished they could have back, like a Titans touchdown during the two-minute drill. And Macdonald emphasized that, that was all a part of the process.

“I think we’re going to watch the tape and like a lot of things we saw, and then we’re going to watch the tape and not like some things,” he said. “It’s kind of par for the course, but I think it’s a great opportunity. You’re going against a different operation, different run schemes, different pass game, play our rules out, just kind of go play ball. And so there’s some things that are off the top of my head that are not above the line, which we’ll attack those and get those things figured out. But overall, I thought it was a good day.”

Linebacker Ernest Jones IV said he likes the joint practices because it’s not often he’s playing in a live game during the preseason, so playing against another offense are good reps for him, but he knows they could have been better.

“I think we played pretty well,” he said. “Our standard is perfection, so we’re not happy. We gave them some things and then some things that we just got to correct. But overall, I think for the ones, got a lot of plays in, got a lot of good work, so we should kind of go into the games feeling good.”

He added, “When I say perfection, we don’t want you to get a yard. We don’t want none of that. And when you do get that, it pisses us off. So that’s just where my frustration is. And I don’t want them to get nothing. I want it to be no Bueno, no good for them. And that’s what we want as a defense. And like you said, they’re in the NFL for a reason. They’re going to make plays. They’re going to find the soft parts in our coverage.”

6. Second-year tight end Elijah Arroyo continues to be a matchup problem for opponents.

Almost as soon as Friday’s practice transitioned from warmups and position drills, second-year tight end Elijah Arroyo had one of the earliest highlights of the day, getting behind the defense for a long completion from Drew Lock. Arroyo, a second-round pick in last year’s draft, had several other catches throughout practice, including a touchdown from Darnold in a red-zone drill. After a relatively quiet rookie season that included a stint on injured reserve, Arroyo looks poised to be a big part of Seattle’s passing game this year, providing real matchup problems for opponents with his combination of size, speed and route running.
