Pluto-Like World’s Thin Atmosphere Poses a Mystery for Astronomers
Scientists are puzzling over another oddball on the edge of the solar system: This time, it’s an icy object less than a quarter of Pluto’s size with a thin atmosphere – a layer of gas that’s not typically found around objects so small.
A Japanese team of researchers — including an amateur astronomer — laid out the curious case of 2002 XV93 this week in the journal Nature Astronomy. 2002 XV93 traces an elliptical path beyond the orbit of Neptune in the icy Kuiper Belt, never coming closer to the sun than 3 billion miles. Like Pluto, it’s locked in a resonance with Neptune that keeps its orbit relatively stable.
The Japanese astronomers, led by Ko Arimatsu of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, tracked the mini-world with several telescopes as it passed in front of a background star in January 2024. They found that the light from the star gradually dimmed before it disappeared behind 2002 XV93, as if the light was filtered through a thin layer of gas.
That finding posed a puzzle: Based on estimates of its size, 2002 XV93 shouldn’t have enough gravitational pull to hold onto an atmosphere for longer than, say, 1,000 years. Follow-up observations from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope produced no evidence that there were frozen gases on the object’s surface. That led Arimatsu and his colleagues to suggest that gases are being spewed out from ice volcanoes, or that a cometary impact released a burst of gas that will eventually dissipate.
The spectral signature of the filtered light would be consistent with an atmosphere containing nitrogen, methane or carbon monoxide — chemicals that are found in Pluto’s somewhat less thin atmosphere. Further observations will be required to verify the atmosphere’s composition.
“This is an amazing development, but it sorely needs independent verification. The implications are profound if verified,” Alan Stern, a planetary scientist at Southwest Research Institute who leads NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt, told The Associated Press.
If 2002 XV93 can hold onto a stable atmosphere, perhaps fed by the emissions of ice volcanoes, other underappreciated celestial bodies might be able to do so as well. “This discovery suggests that the traditional idea that global dense atmospheres form only around larger planets must be revised,” the researchers write.
This week’s findings have come amid hints that Pluto — an oddball world that was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 — may get a second look. “I am very much in the camp of ‘make Pluto a planet again,’ ” NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said during a Senate committee hearing last month. “And I would say we are doing some papers right now on, I think, a position that we would love to escalate through the scientific community to revisit this discussion.”
The senator who asked Isaacman about Pluto was Kansas Republican Jerry Moran — who represents the state where Clyde Tombaugh, Pluto’s discoverer, grew up. The NASA chief alluded to that fact when he said he wanted to “ensure that Clyde Tombaugh gets the credit he received once and rightfully deserves to receive again.” So, Isaacman may have said what he said merely as a political gesture.
As the author of “The Case for Pluto,” I’m fine with Pluto’s present status as one of the solar system’s first five officially recognized dwarf planets. But if someone wants to Make Pluto Great Again, who am I to complain?
In addition to Arimatsu, the authors of the paper published by Nature Astronomy, “Detection of an Atmosphere on a Trans-Neptunian Object Beyond Pluto,” include Fumi Yoshida, Tsutomu Hayamizu, Satoshi Takita, Katsumasa Hosoi, Takafum Ootsubo and Jun-ichi Watanabe. Hayamizu is the amateur astronomer in the group.

Lawsuit: Riverside deputy killed Tesla driver, fiancée in high-speed crash
Gavin Hinkley and his fiancée were running errands in September for their wedding, which was weeks away, when a Riverside County sheriff’s patrol vehicle barreled toward them at 100 mph, running through a red light and colliding with the driver’s side of their car.
Hinkley, 21, died at the crash site, and his fiancée, 20-year-old Madeline Fox, suffered “catastrophic” injuries, including permanent brain trauma, according to a lawsuit filed last week by their families against Riverside County.
The suit alleges that the “grossly negligent” and reckless conduct of deputy Glynn Wilburn, who was driving the patrol car, caused Hinkley’s death and Fox’s serious physical and mental impairment, grief and emotional distress.
Hinkley had been driving the couple’s Tesla and was making a left turn at the intersection of Cherry Valley Boulevard and Roberts Street in the city of Calimesa.
Wilburn, a defendant in the lawsuit, began to brake just before the impact, but was still driving at 98 mph in the seconds before the car slowed to about 72 mph, the suit says.
Riverside County, Southern California Edison, American Medical Response of Southern California and the cities of Calimesa and Beaumont are also named as defendants in the suit filed April 30 in Riverside County Superior Court.
Spencer Lucas, an attorney representing the families with the firm Panish Shea Ravipudi LLP, said the deputy was responding to a dispatch, but regardless, law enforcement must operate with a reasonable level of safety and care.
“There’s no excuse for a cowboy cop to be barreling down a two-lane road through a red light. … He was driving so far in excess of what would be reasonable,” Lucas said in an interview with The Times. “This tragic crash was completely preventable.”
The suit says Southern California Edison erred because its utility equipment blocked visibility, preventing Hinkley from seeing the fast-approaching law enforcement vehicle.
It also alleges that paramedics who responded to the crash with the private ambulance company American Medical Response treated the deputy and transported him before attending to Fox’s and Hinkley’s more serious injuries.
“The deputy, who only had minor injuries, was taken away by the ambulance while [Hinkley and Fox] were left inside of the wreckage,” Lucas said.
Fox, as a result of her brain injury, “has had to start all over again” and learn to swallow, eat on her own, stand up and walk and talk, Lucas said. Her mother has been appointed as her guardian.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment. Lt. Deirdre Vickers said the department does not comment on pending litigation.
Allegations of reckless conduct in the suit largely hinge on a recently released California Highway Patrol report on the crash, which analyzed the crash site and vehicles in detail.
The report said Wilburn had the “siren and forward-facing red and blue emergency lights of the Ford activated,” and that five seconds before the crash, he was driving in the “westbound lane of Cherry Valley Boulevard at 100 miles per hour, with no force applied to the accelerator or brake pedals.”
It also said Wilburn “likely recognized the Tesla as a hazard” about a second before the crash, at which point he swerved his steering wheel to the right and applied the brakes.
Photos of the Tesla included in the report show the left doors of the car completely destroyed.
According to data maintained by the California Highway Patrol, collisions in L.A. County in which a law enforcement vehicle was found to be at fault have risen in recent years. A Times analysis published in October found that the city of L.A. had spent at least $90 million in negotiated payouts or verdicts in more than 1,200 lawsuits related to bad police driving over the last decade.

“Simplified Proteins” Reveal the Biochemical Dawn of Early Earth
When researchers look up at the sky and wonder if we’re not alone, they also realize the origins of life here on Earth might hold the key to finding out. The chaotic chemical soup of our early world eventually led to the staggering complexity of modern life, but how exactly did it start? Proteins were one of the key ingredients in the early years, but we’re still only just discovering how these marvels of modern biology first managed to fold, function, and survive. A new review paper, The borderlands of foldability: lessons from simplified proteins, published recently in Trends in Chemistry, showcases how scientists are attempting to answer this question – by researching “simplified proteins”.
Modern proteins are notoriously complex. Each is composed of some combination of one of twenty distinct amino acids. But it’s highly unlikely that early Earth had access to all twenty of those building blocks of proteins. The earliest peptides were likely short, simple, and composed only of peptides that were either created natively in the environment or produced by life with a very primitive metabolism. Granted, we can’t exactly dig up ancient fossils of early proteins or amino acids to prove this point, but that seems like a reasonable assumption to make.
To simulate this simplified environment, scientists perform what they call “alphabet reduction” by rebuilding proteins with restricted alphabets of only 7 to 14 amino acids. And what they manage to build with such a limited toolkit is still amazing. Scientists have built proteins that will successfully fold into 3D structures while completely excluding entire classes of complex building blocks like simple or aromatic amino acids.
Fraser discusses how we found the build blocks of life in OSIRIS-REx’s samples
This proves that the core architectures of proteins needed to produce life require startlingly little information. A “prebiotic” alphabet of roughly ten amino acids is more than enough to get the ball rolling on more complex life forms. One of the most famous ideas in this space was developed back in 1966 by Richard Eck and Margaret Dayhoff, who hypothesized that ancient, symmetric proteins were formed by the duplication and fusion of short, simple peptides. Modern science has more or less proven that idea in practice, with scientists watching sets of simple peptides “homo-oligomerize” – essentially snapping together like Lego bricks to form symmetric, fully functional proteins.
But back on early Earth, these proteins would not have formed in a vacuum. The environment itself might have played an active role in supporting them. Despite its harshness, the environment of the early Earth actually acted like scaffolding to help support early simple proteins that were only “marginally stable” by themselves. Several factors contributed, including hypersaline oceans, where high salt concentrations exerted external effects on protein stability, such as by “charge screening” that can force proteins to fold.
Another potential environmental factor was the presence of compounds like polyamines and dications (i.e. an atom that carries at +2 charge, like magnesium) that could have acted like molecular glue. Finally, the crowded environment inside a coacervate – the concentrated chemical droplets that separated early life from its environment before cellular membranes were developed – could have promoted both peptide folding and oligomerization that wouldn’t have worked in more isolated environments.

But perhaps the most exciting part about this research area lately has been the introduction of AI. AlphaFold is a powerful AI tool capable of predicting the structure of proteins and analyzing their folding. But more importantly from a space perspective, these large language models of protein libraries allow us to simulate what might have been happening both billions of years ago on Earth, but also actively happening on Enceladus or Europa.
The jump between an inert world with only a chemical soup to the living, breathing biosphere we have today seems massive. But, like most other things in life, it was created step by step. Early, prebiotic protein folding was one of those critical steps, and studying how they did so will be key to understanding that link in the chain. Relying on simple, repeating chemical fragments of a restricted number of abundant chemicals supported by a harsh environment seems a difficult place to start. But it seems to be exactly where we did – and it’s a good idea to keep that in mind as we search for other early stage life journeys throughout the cosmos.
