Prince William is destined to one day wear the crown, with wife Kate Middleton at his side — but what kind of king will he be?
PEOPLE William & Kate: Future King and Queen, out May 23, takes a closer look at the royal couple’s path to the throne and the royal roles they’re preparing to shape together.
Packed with stunning photos and exclusive reporting, this special collector’s edition traces William and Kate’s journeys from childhood to courtship to family life today — offering rare insight into how they’re already stepping into their next roles.
When Prince William, 42, succeeds his father, King Charles, he will become sovereign of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth realms, with Princess Kate, 43, as a steadfast and loving partner.
But after Buckingham Palace’s stunning February 2024 announcement that the 76-year-old King was undergoing cancer treatment, the next chapter has come into sharper focus. “They have been preparing for their future roles sooner than they would have expected,” says royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith.
As the heir and the heir’s spouse, Prince William burnishes his stature as an international statesman while Princess Kate gradually returns to public life after stepping back in 2024 to undergo cancer treatment. (She shared in September that she had completed chemotherapy and announced in January that she is now in remission.)
When the time comes for William and Kate to become king and queen, they’re expected to bring a new generation’s energy, as well as the empathy, family focus and commitment to the crown that they demonstrate now.
William and Kate reflect millennial values by using technology and social media to connect with younger generations. They openly prioritize mental health, family wellness and work-life balance — bringing a fresh honesty to royal life. Their focus on issues like climate change, homelessness and child welfare shows a generation committed to real, hands-on change.
While balancing royal duties, they raise their children with a sense of normalcy and prepare them for the future. Their practical approach respects tradition but pushes to modernize the monarchy. Above all, William and Kate lead with a service-first mindset, using their platform to make a positive difference, true to the spirit of their millennial generation.
It has been a turbulent few years amid a familial rift with Prince Harry, the deaths of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth, and the near-simultaneous cancer diagnoses of the King and Kate — and an era that the Prince and Princess of Wales have weathered together.
Despite the trials, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, remain the center of their world and first priority.
“The Waleses have gone to great lengths to provide their three children with as normal a childhood as possible… But they’ve also long been installing a broader sense of duty,” former PEOPLE senior writer Richard Jerome writes in “William & Catherine: A Millennial Monarchy” in the new issue.

Illustrating that balance, Jerome recounts a poignant moment from December 2023, when Kate brought her children to a baby bank near their home in Windsor. “You’re the volunteers for this evening,” she told them, as they sorted clothes and toys for families in need.
“At the end of their shift, she put her arm around George and said, ‘You can see how rewarding this kind of work is, knowing you are helping out others,’ ” Jerome writes — a quiet but powerful lesson in service.
Kate has emerged as the most popular member of the royal family — and one who wields great influence.
“She takes things seriously — and thank goodness for that,” says a source close to the royal household.

Adds Simon Lewis, former Buckingham Palace communications chief: “She’s very much seen as a player at the center of team Windsor.”
Kate has developed a toughness behind the scenes as she supports her husband. “She has this public image of being nice and smiley,” royal author Valentine Low says. “But she is actually strong-minded, strong-willed and prepared to fight for what she wants and what she thinks is right.”
As she helps shape the next generation, Kate’s unwavering partnership with William and her rock-solid relationship with her own family have given the future queen the tools she needs to succeed.

“The last five years have been a nightmare for them in every possible way — the past year even more so,” royal historian Amanda Foreman previously told PEOPLE about what William and Kate have been through.
“That either crushes a marriage or it brings them together. And just in time, frankly — if there was ever a time when the country required stability, this is it. The international stage is so unstable, it is rather extraordinary to see how both have risen to the occasion.”

What Rita Wilson told Tom Hanks after she was diagnosed with breast cancer

Rita Wilson told Tom Hanks after her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015 that if she were to die, she wanted him to be “sad for a very long time.”
The actress recalled the couple’s heartfelt conversation about her health battle while speaking with Demi Moore at the Sound of a Woman: Rita Wilson in Conversation event in New York City on Tuesday.
“I said to Tom, I’m like, ‘Okay, if, if something happens and I go first, I just have two requests. And one is that you should be sad for a very, very long time,’” Wilson, 69, explained, per People.
Her second request for Hanks, 69, was to “throw me a party.”
“I want it to be a celebration of life,” Wilson remembered telling Hanks. “I want it to be about people telling stories and joy and, remembering me in that way.”
“And I think people, a lot of people want that, you know?” she added. “I think there’s room for that.”
Wilson, who has been married to Hanks since 1988, underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery after doctors found “invasive” cancer.
The “Sleepless in Seattle” star told Moore that her 2019 song “Throw Me a Party” was inspired by her and Hank’s conversation after her diagnosis.
“The song … it came out of this, this story I’ve told before, but if you haven’t heard it, it was, when you get the diagnosis and you’re like, ‘I don’t know, I don’t know what’s gonna happen, but I hope I’m still here, you know, in a few years,’” Wilson told the crowd.
After reflecting on her cancer battle, Wilson happily told the crowd, “I’m here. Yay!”
In March 2025, Wilson marked a decade since she was cancer-free with a heartfelt Instagram post.
“10 years. And I am so deeply grateful,” Wilson told her followers.
She continued, “The gratitude is overwhelming. Didn’t always feel this way. And you know that, anybody who’s going through [it, or] who’s survived knows that it’s an up and down, like, hamster wheel. But then you get to this point.”
Wilson said that while she doesn’t “talk about it much,” she posted about her cancer-free anniversary because “it’s important to celebrate good news.”
“I am thinking of anybody out there who might be going through some difficulties,” she added. “You’re in my thoughts and prayers.”

King Charles’ personal gift to President Trump carries deep historical message

King Charles’ gift to President Donald Trump holds a deeply historical significance regarding relations between the US and the British monarchy.
The king, 77, gave Trump a framed premium copy of the 1879 design plans for the Resolute Desk during their gift exchange on Tuesday as part of the royals’ state visit, reports People.
The desk — which sits in the Oval Office — signifies the uniting ties between the United Kingdom and the United States as it was originally a gift from Queen Victoria to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880.
It’s made from the wood of the British exploration ship the H.M.S. Resolute, which was found by American whalers after it was abandoned in 1854, according to the White House Historical Association.
The boat was eventually repaired and shipped back to Queen Victoria in 1856 as a showing of goodwill. The desk was made later after the ship was decommissioned in 1879 following years of service in the Royal Navy.
Its original design plans are kept by the National Maritime Museum in London.
In return, President Trump gave Charles a premium copy of a historical record from John Adams to John Jay in 1785. In the letter, Adams recounts his experience having King George III accept him as the first US ambassador to Great Britain.
The royal couple touched down in the US on Monday for their four-day visit in celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday.
The trip marks their first visit since Charles became king upon his mother’s death at 96 in September 2022.
On the first stop of their itinerary, Charles and Camilla, 78, met with the president and first lady Melania in DC where they sat for a private tea.
On Tuesday, Charles addressed congress — marking the second time a British monarch has spoken in front of the governing body since his mother in 1991.
They later made their way to the White House for the state dinner honoring King Charles hosted by Trump and his wife.
After finishing their stay in Washington, Charles and Camilla are expected to travel to New York City for several events.
The royal couple will reportedly honor the 2,977 victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks by meeting with first responders and some of the victims’ families ahead of the tragedy’s upcoming 25th anniversary.
Their state visit will come to a close in Virginia on Thursday, where they will attend a block party in honor of America’s 250th birthday.
At some point, Charles is expected to visit a national park by himself and Camilla will likely attend an event spotlighting horse racing in the US.
