US marshal shot dead serving arrest warrant in Louisiana | US crime

A federal agent was fatally shot while trying to help authorities capture a man who failed to show up to his sexual battery trial in Louisiana, according to the US justice department.

Clarence Frazier Jr, 48, was charged with murder in the killing of deputy US marshal Drew Hanson, authorities said. Frazier could face life imprisonment or the death penalty if he is eventually convicted of murdering Hanson.

The justice department said Hanson was participating in a joint law enforcement operation to arrest Frazier in the Louisiana city of Alexandria for having failed to attend his trial on a sexual battery charge.

According to federal prosecutors, US marshals and local sheriff’s office deputies obtained a search warrant for Frazier’s home on Monday and identified themselves once they arrived there.

Authorities said they eventually forced entry into Frazier’s home and found him barricaded in his bedroom. Frazier allegedly opened fire at officers, striking Hanson and wounding him mortally.

Frazier was arrested after a standoff. Officials said he was injured during that standoff and taken to a hospital for treatment.

A statement from acting US attorney general Todd Blanche said Hanson “paid the ultimate price while protecting our communities”.

“His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his service will forever stand as an inspiration to all who wear the badge,” Blanche’s statement added.

Hanson is among more than 200 US marshals, deputy marshals, special deputy marshals and marshal guards who have died in the line of duty since 1794, according to a roll call of honor on the agency’s website.

Texans co-founder Janice McNair dies at 89

Janice McNair, the co-founder and Senior Chair of the Houston Texans, has died. She was 89.

The Texans announced Mrs. McNair’s passing on Tuesday afternoon.

She founded the NFL’s 32nd franchise in 2002 with her husband, Bob. The Texans brought the NFL back to Houston, following the relocation of the Oilers to Tennessee in 1997.

Bob McNair passed in 2018, at the age of 81. Janice served as primary owner of the team following Bob’s death. She transferred the role to her son, Cal, in 2024.

“Mom was exceptional,” Cal said in a statement issued by the team.” She exuded kindness, radiated joy, had an endless amount of hope and love, and lived an incredible life centered around faith, family, philanthropy and football. It’s impossible to describe the profound gratitude that my sisters, Ruth and Melissa, and I feel for having her as our mom. Outside of our family, nothing mattered more to her than her beloved Texans. I remain honored to lead this franchise and build on the foundation my parents set when they brought football back to Houston. Mom leaves an indelible mark on our family, our team and our community, and her giving spirit will always be embedded in the fabric of our organization. While I’m heartbroken, I take great comfort in knowing she is now reunited with my dad, her favorite teammate.”

She is survived by four children, sixteen grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

We extend our condolences to the McNair family and the Texans organization.
