Robert De Niro had no idea ‘Taxi Driver’ would become a classic

You talkin’ to him?
Robert De Niro had no idea his 1976 film “Taxi Driver” would be lauded as a classic.
“You never can think that you’re doing something that’s going to have an impact,” the actor, 82, exclusively explained to Page Six in a recent interview alongside his fellow Tribeca Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal to promote next month’s event.
The Oscar winner “just never look[s] at it that way,” he adding, noting that success is “out of your control.”
The neo-noir drama, directed by Martin Scorsese, stars De Niro as an unhinged taxi driver named Travis Bickle, whose mental state deteriorates over the course of the movie.
De Niro acted in the iconic role alongside Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, Peter Boyle, and Albert Brooks.
The project generated controversy at the time for graphic violence and 12-year-old Foster’s casting as a child sex worker — and, later, for inspiring John Hinckley Jr.’s attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan.
Nevertheless, it is considered one of the greatest movies ever made and, in 1994, was designated as “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant by the U.S. Library of Congress when selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
The movie, which turned 50 this year, is being screened at the June film festival — and De Niro and Scorsese, 83, will reunite for a conversation about the project.
Their sitdown is just one of many special talks and screenings taking place at this year’s 25th Tribeca Festival.
Not only are interviews with Madonna, Sean Penn and Josh Safdie also scheduled, but there will be special anniversary screenings of “Cable Guy” and “Bridget Jones’s Diary.”
“There are so many great things to see,” Rosenthal told us. “There’s so much music, everybody from Earth, Wind and Fire and Madonna to Noga Erez and Sarah Bareilles and Peter Frampton.
“There’s just a lot to see,” the 69-year-old continued, stressing that the festival is “a welcome festival for all New Yorkers [with] tickets available” now.
The annual event, which runs from June 3 through June 14, was established in 2002 to spur the revitalization of Lower Manhattan following the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Why Charles Barkley declined invitation to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding

Charles Barkley revealed that he turned down an invitation to attend Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s New York City wedding.
“I don’t go to weddings and funerals,” the NBA legend said on the “Unfiltered With Ricky Bo & Bill Colarulo” podcast Tuesday.
“I did get an invite, and I politely declined. Because I thought it was gonna be a crap show,” he added.
“I love Travis and Jason [Kelce]. I’ve only met Taylor one time. But yeah, I did get an invite but I said, ‘Hey, that’s just too much,’” Barkley, 63, shared.
The “Inside the NBA” host said he just wants to “hang out and play golf” in his spare time.
“I don’t wanna dress up and all that other stuff,” he said. “But I appreciate the invitation; it was pretty special.”
Barkley isn’t the only celebrity who opted to skip the Kansas City Chiefs star and the “Bad Blood” singer’s big day.
On Monday, Ryan Seacrest revealed that he actually confirmed to attend the ceremony and didn’t go.
“I RSVP’d to go, and then Disney hired me to do the Fourth of July 250 special on the 3rd and the 4th,” the “American Idol” host explained on his radio show. “So, I had to cancel.”
Seacrest, 51, said he felt “kind of torn” about the decision but “couldn’t have done both” due to the scheduling.
The “Shrek Forever After” voice actor said though he was “so honored and thrilled to be invited,” he “had no choice” but to skip the nuptials since “it’s part of [his] job at Disney to do these things.”
Swift and Kelce, both 36, exchanged 20-minute vows in front of more than an estimated 1,000 guests at Madison Square Garden last Friday.
The wedding was officiated by comedian Adam Sandler and featured a garden theme.
The pop star and the tight end wore Christian Dior Haute Couture to say “I do” and Swift reportedly walked down the aisle to her 2008 hit song “Love Story.”
Guests won lavish prizes during the reception, including designer bags and Cartier watches.

Bunnie Xo, 46, spotted making out with 24-year-old reality star at estranged husband Jelly Roll’s bar

Bunnie Xo has moved on from her split from Jelly Roll with a much younger man.
The “Dumb Blonde” podcast host, 46, was spotted making out with “Calabasas Confidential” star Dylan Wolf, 24, on the Fourth of July in video obtained by TMZ. Interestingly enough, the pair was kissing at her estranged husband’s bar — Jelly Roll’s Goodnight Nashville, in Nashville, Tennessee.
In the video, Bunnie and Wolf lock lips while sitting beside each other at the bar, as lights flash blue around them. According to the outlet, the two were hanging out at the rooftop’s VIP section.
On Monday, Wolf posted a cryptic TikTok video with Bunnie, writing, “@everyone thinking they’re connecting the dots” over it.
“Undeleted Pod coming soon @Bunnie Xo,” he captioned the video.
Wolf wears the same black cap reading “I love a girl from Malibu” in the TikTok video that he wears in TMZ’s video of him kissing Bunnie.
Meanwhile, fans noted that Bunnie has appeared to take down her podcast episode last month in which she talked about her surprising split from Jelly Roll, 41, after more than a decade together. The podcast is no longer available to view, though she’s made no mention of deleting it.
Wolf stars in Netflix’s new reality series, “Calabasas Confidential,” which follows children of the elite who live in the high-profile zip code. He was previously linked to Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin’s 28-year-old daughter, model Delilah Belle Hamlin. They were snapped holding hands in Los Angeles last November.
He told Decider in May that the two were no longer dating.
“She’s a lovely lady. That kind of just happened out of the blue over the summer, as well,” he said “We’re no longer tied together. That was just kind of short-lived. But it was great, and all the best to her and her family. They’re lovely people.”
Meanwhile, Jelly Roll filed for divorce from Bunnie in May, in Williamson County, Tennessee. Bunnie said her estranged husband was already dating again in her podcast episode last month about their split.
“He is ready — raring and ready to go,” she shared. “He’s all hopped up on testosterone, let me tell you. He’s even started dating.”
She said her ex had her full support when it comes to seeing other women.
“His DMs are open,” she told her listeners.
A source previously told Page Six that the two split due to their changing lifestyles.
“Some people around them felt there was growing tension as Jelly embraced a more faith-centered lifestyle while Bunnie continued building the outspoken and provocative brand that had always been authentic to her,” a source exclusively told us.
“Whether that’s fair or not, it became increasingly difficult to reconcile those two worlds.”

Prince Harry ‘happy to be back in the UK’ despite security concerns keeping Meghan Markle, kids away

Prince Harry marked his return to the UK by supporting his dear friend Misan Harriman during Monday night’s premiere of the latter’s documentary, “Shoot the People.”
The Duke of Sussex, 41, was pictured smiling beside Harriman — who previously snapped the photos Harry and Meghan Markle used to announce their second pregnancy in 2021 — at the Picturehouse Central cinema in London’s Piccadilly Circus.
Beside them in pictures were filmmaker Andy Mundy-Castle and British writer and broadcaster Afua Hirsch.
“He was at last night’s premiere to support his good friend Misan and his brilliant new film ‘Shoot the People,’” Harry’s spokesperson told People, adding that he was “in good form last night” after arriving in the UK in the afternoon.
“He’s really happy to be back in the UK and really looking forward to the week’s engagements,” they added.
Harry’s support comes as Harriman will be stepping down from his role as chairman of the Southbank Centre over anti-semitism accusations.
He came under fire after allegedly accusing news outlets of omitting a Muslim victim from coverage of attacks in Golders Green, north London. He also allegedly compared Reform UK’s local election success with the Holocaust, per the Telegraph.
Harry is set to make multiple public appearances to promote various charities, including kicking off the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.
He was originally planning to bring Markle, 44, and their two children — Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5 — on his visit. However, they were denied taxpayer-funded security.
Harry’s rep also told Page Six Monday his invitation to stay at Buckingham Palace during his visit was “withdrawn at the last moment” after he “formally” accepted it.
“Following RAVEC’s decision not to provide security for his family, the Duke spent last week making alternative security arrangements,” the rep said in a statement. “Once those arrangements were in place, [Harry] was able to formally accept the offer of accommodation for himself over the weekend.”
The rep added it’s “disappointing” the offer “has now been withdrawn,” citing Tuesday’s forthcoming judgment in the Associated Newspapers Limited case as the reason.
“Buckingham Palace has, however, been aware of that judgment since last Thursday,” the rep stated. “It is therefore unclear why, having formally accepted the accommodation offer, it has now been withdrawn at the last moment.”
However, the BBC reported Monday the “Spare” author had not responded in time to the offer to stay at Buckingham Palace. Sources told the outlet Harry was informed Saturday evening he would not be able to stay there.
A source familiar with the situation told Page Six Saturday that Harry’s decision to bring Markle and his kids was still up in the air due to security concerns.
“The reason for the decision is likely to be down to concerns from the Duke’s security team and the lack of up-to-date Risk Management Board,” the source said. “The RMB was supposed to have taken place in March but was inexplicably parked.”
“Such an assessment would have provided a more comprehensive understanding of the threats and risks faced by the Duke and his family,” they concluded.
Harry has not brought Archie and Lillibet back to the UK since 2022.
A source told Page Six last month the father of two “desperately wants” his children to see his father, 77-year-old King Charles.
