Nicole Kidman recalls learning of mom’s death at Venice Film Festival

Nicole Kidman is opening up about the day she found out her mother had died.
The 58-year-old actress spoke at the live speaker series, HISTORYTalks 2026, which is organized by the History Channel, on Saturday about a number of things, including learning of her mother’s death just prior to accepting the best actress award for “Babygirl” at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024.
“I’d won best actress at Venice Film Festival. This seems to be such a common theme through my life,” she said, per The Hollywood Reporter.
“I was about to go on stage, and I found out my mother had died. I went right back to the room in Venice, got into bed and was completely devastated.”
She recalled feeling as if she didn’t know how she would be able to continue on without her mom, saying, she “was so much a part of my existence. The idea of being there at that particular moment was harrowing.”
The “Big Little Lies” star went on to say that “the idea of being there at that particular moment was harrowing,” and she began to take steps to leave Venice as soon as possible.
“I remember getting into a boat in the canal, and literally at night trying to find my way to the airport, and then turning around and going, I can’t even do this,” she said.
“And then went back into the bed, and I was alone. My husband wasn’t there. My children weren’t there. I’d gone to win an award. What should have been a beautiful thing, ended up with that. But there is the contrast of life.”
Having gone through this tragic experience alone, Kidman says she now tells people “that’s when I know I’m resilient,” and “can survive pretty much anything.”
Kidman’s mother, Janelle, died in September 2024 at the age of 84.
Two years after her mother’s death, the Academy Award-winning actress shared with investigative journalist, Vicky Nguyen, as part of the private school’s Silk Speaker Series, that she has plans to become a death doula.
“As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide,” Kidman said per the San Francisco Chronicle.
“Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers and our work, and wanting to take care of her because my father wasn’t in the world anymore, and that’s when I went, ‘I wish there was these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care.’”
Kidman shares two daughters — Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 15 — with her ex-husband, Keith Urban, while her sister, Antonia, has six kids.
The actress has spoken about her close bond with her mother many times over the years, telling the Sydney Morning Herald about how her mom always pushed her to pursue her dreams, saying, “she carved her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to carve their own paths.”
“Mom didn’t necessarily get the career that she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have opportunities that were equal,” Kidman added.
“That’s given me my life. And she gave me my life, she and my dad.”
Kidman is following in her mother’s footsteps as a supportive mom, as she is supporting her daughter, Sunday Rose, in her budding modeling career.
She made her runway debut at Paris Fashion Week in 2025, walking for Miu Miu.

Katy Perry sparkles in silver for World Cup 2026 opening ceremony performance

Katy Perry kicked off the 2026 World Cup with a bang.
She brought the energy at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles for the tournament’s opening ceremony Friday night, wearing a silver Stella McCartney FW26 Ready-to-Wear dress.
The floor-length dress featured an exaggerated waistline and was constructed with what appears to be long strands of tinsel — perhaps a nod to Tinseltown, the home of this year’s competition.
The pop star performed her song “Wonder,” off her 2024 album “143.”
Perry wasn’t alone for the performance — as she chose to share the worldwide stage with a special guest.
The day before she took to the stage, Perry shared a TikTok video introducing the world to Tius, a 10-year-old boy from Norway.
“That little voice you’re listening to right now is Tius,” she wrote alongside the clip as a young voice can be heard singing.
“Tius recorded his part on ‘Wonder’ when he was 5 years old in 2021. I heard his vocal in 2023 and was inspired to write the verses for ‘Wonder’ and added it to my sixth album,” she explained. “Tius is 10 now and flew all the way to LA from Norway to sing this song with me on Friday at the World Cup ✨⚽.”
Perry opened the star-studded number, which also included Tyla, Anitta and more.
The US intro is one of three opening ceremonies by the host countries, with Shakira headlining in Mexico City on Thursday and Alanis Morrisette, Michael Bublé and more in Canada Friday afternoon.
While performing on behalf of the United States, Perry also has connections up north after going public with her relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in December.
Since then, her “Teenage Dream”-era wardrobe has become decidedly more subdued, especially for public political events — but she brought back her pop star ways for her on-stage performance Friday night.
The couple made their red carpet debut earlier this week, when Trudeau accompanied her to the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of her new concert movie.
The pair, who have been together for nearly a year, weren’t shy and showed tons of PDA for the cameras, hugging during the viewing of “Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live From Paris.”
We’ll see what team the California native roots for throughout the tournament.

David Faustino gives update on Christina Applegate’s ‘very hard’ MS battle

David Faustino, who played Christina Applegate’s brother in “Married… With Children,” revealed the actress still has her signature humor as she battles multiple sclerosis.
“It’s been very hard for her, but she does keep her humor,” Faustino said in a new interview with US Weekly, calling Applegate’s MS diagnosis “a real blow.”
Faustino, 52, said Applegate, 54, has had a “dry, sarcastic sense of humor since the moment I met her,” and despite her serious health battle that left her recently hospitalized, “nothing has changed.”
The “Dead to Me” star is still “extremely sarcastic” and “extremely dry,” Faustino confirmed.
“She gets through this with some humor, and that’s kind of her way that she moves through it,” the voice actor explained, noting he’s been “a support” to Applegate since she announced her diagnosis in June 2021.
Faustino also confirmed he’s in regular contact with the Emmy Award winner.
“I do a lot of visits with her. A lot of texting, a lot of checking in,” he said. “A lot of funny just crap that we talk about. And that’s all I can do, right? Give her my love.”
He added, “We do have deep convos when we sit. But we also keep the laughter [going] as well.”
Applegate and Faustino played siblings Kelly and Bud Bundy, respectively, in “Married… With Children.”
The sitcom, which aired on Fox from 1987 to 1997, also starred Ed O’Neill and Katey Sagal as their parents, Al and Peggy Bundy.
Applegate gave an update on her health in April after she was hospitalized in Los Angeles.
“Thank you for the outpouring of love and well wishes. Health issues are a constant for me, but I’m a strong chick and I’m getting stronger and better every day,” she wrote on Instagram.
“I’m taking a moment to focus on my health, but I’ll be back with more to say soon enough,” the “You With the Sad Eyes” author added.
Applegate’s rep wouldn’t confirm if the actress was hospitalized due to her autoimmune disease.
“I have no comment on whether she is in the hospital or what her medical treatments are,” the rep told Page Six in a statement on April 16. “She’s had a long history of complicated medical conditions that she has been refreshingly open about, as evidenced in her memoir and on her podcast.”
In February, Applegate revealed she’s been confined to her bed due to ongoing pain, but she still tries to take her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie, to school.
“I want to take her; it’s my favorite thing to do. It’s the only time we have together by ourselves,” the “Friends” star explained.
“I tell myself, ‘Just get her there safely and get home so you can get back into bed.’ And that’s what I do,’” she added.

Mariska Hargitay’s schedule sparks Swift wedding speculation

Looks like Mariska Hargitay is going to be back at Madison Square Garden with Taylor Swift.
The “Law & Order: SVU” star — who sat next to Swift in matching “Stevie Knicks” tees at MSG on Wednesday as the Knicks narrowly beat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 — appears to have a suspicious slot open on her calendar when Swift is set to say “I do.”
Hargitay is currently starring in the Broadway production “Every Brilliant Thing.” While the one-person play runs every Friday night, an eagle-eyed fan pointed out to Page Six that the show is canceled on July 3, the date Page Six exclusively reported is Swift’s wedding to Kansas City Chiefs’ star Travis Kelce.
The nuptials, as Page Six exclusively reported, are taking place at the famed arena over Independence Day weekend.
Hargitay and Swift are longtime pals and mutual admirers.
Swift named one of her Scottish Fold cats Olivia Benson after Hargitay’s ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ character. Hargitay’s cat, meanwhile, is named “Karma,” after a Swift song.
Hargitay also appeared in Swift’s celebrity heavy music video for “Bad Blood,” in 2015 along with pals like Selena Gomez, Karlie Kloss and Gigi Hadid.
She also appeared on stage with Swift during the “1989” world tour in 2015 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. And she was part of Swift’s squad at that year’s MTV VMAs.
Alana Haim and Este Haim were also with Swift and Hargitay at Game 4, in punning T-shirts reading “Knickelback,” and “Knicole Kidman.”
Hargitay managed to make it to the game directly after her Broadway show, which runs around 85 minutes, by sprinting.
“I took four minutes off the running time of my show, and I knew the traffic would be crazy, so I sprinted from the Hudson Theater on 44th and 6th to MSG,” Hargitay told The Hollywood Reporter. “But I knew everything was going to be alright, because I was wearing my Jalen Brunson Kobe 5 Protos that Jalen gave me a few months ago. But I’m not gonna lie, the ten block sprint after a 2-show day was no joke.”
Adding, “I love my husband, and our wedding night was great and all, but I think it might have been the greatest night of my life.”
